Mark Parker was a journalist from the American News Syndicate. He was Kitty Fremont's childhood friend.

The first part of the novel deals with the escape of Jewish refugees from Caraolos, engineered by the Mossad Aliyah Bet (an illegal organization working to smuggle Jews into Palestine).

He was tortured by the Gestapo and sent to a concentration camp. After the war, he learned that his wife and sons were killed. He blamed himself for not having left Germany in time despite his wife's pleas. This suffering and loss made him incurably insane.

The Maccabees killed him in the bed of his Arab mistress. They took revenge for the blast engineered by him which killed several important Jewish leaders.

Landau became famous within the Maccabees for his bravery. He was caught along with Akiva and sentenced to death by the British, but the Maccabees arranged his and Akiva's escape.
