Hari was jogging around the university campus to lose his weight, at Ryan's insistence. Neha, who was learning to drive her car, accidentally bumped into him.

Ryan was a carefree person, and hence encouraged Hari and Alok to have fun rather than study. This included playing squash and chess and visiting tourist spots in Delhi in the free time. As a result of this, they messed up their semester exams. So, a frustrated Alok left the group and befriended Venkat, a studious boy, and studied with him.

Other students in the Kumaon hostel included Venkat, Rajesh, who was always busy scratching some part of his body, and Sukhwinder, who always broke into smiles at the sight of anyone.

He was a traditional conservative person quite protective of his daughter. Prof. Veera taught Fluid Mechanics (FluMech) and was the three's favourite professor. Prof. Saxena and Prof. Dubey were also professors in the same department.

The lipstick holder was designed by Hari and Ryan in the machining lab of the college. It had a capacity for holding up to four lipsticks at a time and some of its features included a snap-up lid, a little mirror and the name "Neha Cherian" etched on top.

Hari was always afraid of the vivas and was specially nervous before Prof. Cherian's viva as he wanted to impress him. According to Ryan, the vodka would make him less inhibited and so Hari took three swigs before going for the viva. But Hari started slurring at the viva because of the drink and Cherian smelled the vodka, so he gave Hari zero out of ten.

Answer: Operation Pendulum

They called the operation "Pendulum" because they believed that it would swing their miserable fortunes in IIT. All was going well till Alok decided to call his home from Cherian's office, and the switchboard outside the building lit up a little red bulb indicating that the telephone was in use.

In this way, the guards realized that someone was in the office and caught the three redhanded.

The three were suspended for one semester, implying that they had to study one more year and hence wait another year to sit for the job interviews. Alok was expecting to overcome his family's financial problems by getting a decent job, therefore he was so shocked that he tried to commit suicide by jumping from the nine-storey institute building, but thankfully survived.

In fact, Hari and Ryan were so careless that they slept through the convocation. It was past eleven when they finally woke up. So while the rest of the class collected their degrees proudly, they sat eating at a ramshackle, illegal roadside establishment just outside their hostel gates.
