Literature Quiz: His Dark Materials: 10 Questions | Authors

I think that Philip Pullman's books are some of the best works ever, rivaling Harry Potter! That's only my opinion though and I hope yours will agree. Enjoy! Caution: This quiz contains spoilers. It includes information from all three books.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'The Northern Lights' Lyra starts out with the surname Belacqua, but later on she is also given the name 'Silvertongue'. Who named her this?

Answer: Iorek Byrnison

He calls her this because he thinks that she's excellent at lying. Although not directly related to this event, later in the series, Lyra becomes upset because she thinks it's her only talent. It's a good one, though.
2. Although called 'The Northern Lights' in the UK, when the book was released in the US, what was it called?

Answer: The Golden Compass

I thought it a bit of a shame that it was called 'The Golden Compass' when made into a film by New Line Cinema, as Pullman is English. Incidentally, he's from Norwich. Anyway, that's by the by. The other two books share the same names in the UK and the US.
3. At the start of 'The Northern Lights', Lyra is cared for by which college?

Answer: Jordan College

I chose the name 'Lonsdale College' because Lyra's specific carer is called Mrs Lonsdale, who doesn't quite seem to be so pleased with Lyra's tricks. Exeter College seems to be Jordan College's polar opposite in our world rather than Lyra's, as the location and layout of the two are strikingly similar.
4. Metatron is The Authority's regent and he carries out all his deeds, but who was he when human?

Answer: Enoch

Baruch and Balthamos are the names of the angels who accompany Will after leaving his late father, John Parry, also known as Stanislaus Grumman. Xaphania was the leader of the rebel angels and also some sort of war adviser to Lord Asriel when he was plotting to overthrow God. Xaphania is an angel, as well as God himself.
5. Each book is named after an important object found in that volume. What is the purpose of the Amber Spyglass?

Answer: It enables you to see Dust.

Mary Malone invents the Amber Spyglass whilst with the Mulefa, strange creatures from another world which ride on wheel-like seeds to aid her in her quest. This ultimately ends up in her 'playing the part of the snake' as the Dust said she would by tempting Lyra to fall in love with Will. By talking about Marzipan, strangely.
6. If the plural is Mulefa, what is the singular? Mulefa is referring to the creatures Mary Malone travels with in 'The Amber Spyglass'.

Answer: Zalif

The Mulefa have trunks and communicate with each other through a mixture of sign language with their trunks (or Malone's arm when she does it) and with primitive words. However, our way of speech probably seems just plain odd to them.
7. John Parry also goes by the name of Stanislaus Grumman, but what is his other name and who calls him that?

Answer: Jopari, by the Tartars

John Parry fell ill because he had lived in a different world for too long. However, he was eventually killed by a witch who had asked for his love and basically got dumped. I think killing him's a bit harsh though, a far cry from Monica stamping on Paul the wine-guy's watch when they broke up on "Friends". Nice to know he was loyal to Elaine though. We never find out from the trilogy what happened to Will's mum.
8. What was the name of the witch who killed John Parry?

Answer: Juta Kamainen

Juta Kamainen has a robin daemon. Serafina Pekkala is the leader of her tribe and Ruta Skadi is the leader of hers. Ruta Skadi's tribe are from Latvia. I made the other witch up. Sounds good doesn't it? No? Oh, well.
9. What is Sir Charles Latrom better known as, to Lyra?

Answer: Lord Boreal

His daemon is a serpent, although when Lyra is annoyed at him (and doesn't know he is Lord Boreal and therefore, doesn't know he has a daemon) predicts it would be a dung beetle. Charming. He very coolly replies, "If the pharaohs of Egypt are content to be represented by a dung beetle, then so am I." Good for him.
10. What is the one window between worlds - that would allow Will and Lyra to still be able to see each other in different worlds - being used for?

Answer: To let the dead out of the world of the dead.

I think that this is more heart-wrenching than even Dumbledore dying in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". I keep thinking that surely two windows wouldn't do any more harm than one. Although I suppose it's that attitude that led to loads being created in the first place.

They couldn't leave them open because Dust, which is vital, escapes through them. A great finish to a great book and hopefully a great quiz!
