Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Steven was a little kid, who did he often follow around?

Answer: his father

He was always following his dad around. His dad described him as being like a puppy dog, and his mom said that she couldn't blame him because his dad got to do all the cool things. After they moved from the country to the suburbs, he didn't follow his dad around quite as much. He was able to adjust but he wasn't as happy as he used to be.
2. On December 4th of 1972, when seven-year-old Steven Stayner was walking home from school, a man asked him if he and the minister could give Steven a ride home and talk to his mother about church donations. Did Steven get in the car with them?

Answer: Yes

Parnell, who was not a real minister, asked his friend Murphy to help him kidnap Steven, who he claimed to be an abused child, and raise him up as a boy of strong faith. Murphy didn't want to do it at first, but Parnell persuaded him to. During the first week, before moving away with Parnell, Steven spent some time with Murphy and he liked him.

Steven got confused when they didn't go home, and Parnell told him that he was going to spend the night with him. When he got to the cabin, Steven was given new toys, but Parnell got angry when he wanted to take some home to share with his siblings. That night, Parnell molested Steven for the first time.
3. What happened to Kenneth Parnell when he was thirteen, soon before he set fire to a pasture?

Answer: he was molested by a guest at his mother's boarding house

His father left the family when Kenneth was five, and this caused him to act out and pull out four of his teeth with a pair of pliers. Eight years later, he befriended a man at his mother's boarding house and the man molested him, causing him to act out and play with fire. This was the start of many problems with the law and many stays in prison.

Years later, Parnell caught Steven playing with fire and got angry at him and hit him, even though he also played with fire as a young boy. Steven once claimed that his interest in fire had nothing to do with being molested, but that's hard to believe.
4. How does Parnell explain why Steven, whose name he changes to Dennis, will be living with him now, instead of his real parents?

Answer: his parents had too many children, so they gave Parnell legal custody

He arrived with a dog, which he had gotten from his mother. He told Steven this and they soon moved away.
5. What happened to the flyers that Steven's parents sent out to school around California, in hopes of helping to find their son?

Answer: they were thrown away

They all got thrown away. The people who threw them away probably thought that they wouldn't help, but they could have. Parnell actually sent Dennis to one of the schools that received the flyers, for a short time.
6. How did Parnell meet Barbara?

Answer: though Dennis

Dennis befriended one of her sons, and then Parnell befriended Barbara and her husband. Barbara later divorced her husband and moved in with Dennis and Parnell, leaving her children with their father. The three of them often all slept in one bed, and Dennis was forced to have sex with Barbara.
7. Parnell would have Dennis stay at friends' houses while he visited his mother. When asked why Dennis never went with him, what did he say?

Answer: "She would get mad if Dennis came."

It is unknown whether or not Parnell's mother knew about Dennis or not. It seems likely that she didn't, but Barbara remembered overhearing a phone conversation with her in which he mentioned "the kid".
8. Parnell and Barbara opened a children's book store.

Answer: False

They opened a religious bookstore, but not many people came. It wasn't long before they shut it down because it lost money.
9. Where did Dennis hide his pot stash from Parnell?

Answer: the heating vents

Dennis and his friends started smoking pot in sixth grade. Parnell was against pot smoking, so Dennis had to hide it. He was always afraid that Parnell would find out, but he never did.

It's strange that Parnell was against smoking pot because he did smoke cigarettes. Later, although I don't think he actually smoked it, he went into business selling pot.
10. How much money did Parnell offer to pay Sean Poorman to find him a new kid?

Answer: fifty dollars

Sean Poorman was a friend of Dennis's who Parnell had hired to sell pot for him, but one day he had other things in mind. On Valentine's day of 1980, Parnell and Poorman kidnapped Timmy White.
11. Did Parnell make plans to murder Dennis?

Answer: Yes

Parnell had planned on murdering Dennis soon after he got Timmy. He even had a spot picked out to bury him.
12. After getting to know each other, Dennis and Timmy decided to go on a trip together. Where did they go?

Answer: to the police station

Dennis decided to take Timmy home. One night, after Parnell had left for his job as a night security guard, they ran away. First they went to Timmy's babysitter's house, because it was closest, but no one was home. Then they went to his parents' house, but no one was there either. Then they went to the police station and Dennis told the cops his real name, but he spelled it wrong.
13. What happened to Dennis's dog?

Answer: Steven took her home with him

Parnell had given Queenie to Dennis soon after he had kidnapped him. She was the puppy of Parnell's mother's dog.
14. How long did Parnell spend in prison for kidnapping Steven and Timmy?

Answer: five years

He was sentenced to only seven years for kidnapping both of them, but he was able to get parole after five years. He was charged only with the kidnappings and never for molesting Steven.
15. How old did Steven Stayner live to be?

Answer: 24

He died of a head injury, which he got in a motorcycle accident when he wasn't wearing a helmet. Timmy White, who grew up to be a deputy, lived to be 35. Kenneth Parnell lived to be 72.
