This excerpt comes from the poem 'The Tiger,' or as it was originally entitled 'The Tyger'. Blake was a Romantic poet of the 18th and 19th century. 'The Tyger' was published in 1794 as part of a collection of poems entitled 'Songs of Experience'. It remains his best known piece of poetry and one of the most famous pieces of British poetry.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, was one of England's greatest Romantic poets and a favourite of Queen Victoria, being Poet Laureate throughout much of her reign.
'The Lady of Shalott' is one of his best known works, published in his second anthology, in 1833.

Robert Burns is Scotland's national and best loved poet. In fact he is so popular that there is an official holiday dedicated to him (Burns' Night) on 25th January, Burns' birthday, during which 'the Haggis' is piped in.
Burns was a very prolific poet whose works often covered Scottish folklore and whose poems were often adapted to music.

WB Yeats, a noted Irish poet and writer, was one of the leading writers of the early 20th century.
His poem 'Sailing to Byzantium' was published in a collection of poems by Yeats in 1928. It is a metaphorical work, based on man's ideas of eternal life.

The film 'No Country for Old Men' is actually based on a book of the same title, by Cormac McCarthy, who, in turn, took his title from 'Sailing To Byzantium'.

Answer: Home Thoughts from Abroad

Browning wrote 'Home Thoughts From Abroad' in 1845, whilst staying in Italy. He was married to Elizabeth Barrett, a poet in her own right, who suffered from ill health, hence the Brownings spending long stretches of time in Italy. Other notable works of Browning's include 'The Pied Piper Of Hamelin' and ' Porphyria's Lover.'
Browning died in 1889 in Italy aged 77 years old.

Answer: Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Samuel Taylor Coleridge was a Romantic poet, born in Devon in 1772. 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' was published in 1798 in his anthology 'Lyrical Ballads'. It tells the tale of an old sea-faring man who accidentally shoots an albatross. To sailors this act is an atrocity as albatrosses were classed as good luck birds who brought good sailing weather.
Other notable works by Coleridge include 'Kubla Khan' and 'Christabel'.

William Wordsworth was a Georgian Romantic poet and a good friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Together they were the founding members of the Romantic movement in poetry. Wordsworth lived most of his later life in the Lake District, where he was classed as one of the leading 'Lake Poets'. He lived in Dove cottage, which is now a museum to him.

John Donne was a poet, lawyer and priest, born in London in 1572. 'Meditation XVII' is the most well known part of 'Devotion XVII' which in turn is from 'Devotions upon Emergent Occasions' written in 1624 and written in honour of the future King of England, Charles I.
The phrase 'For whom the bell tolls' has been used in several areas of popular culture, the most noted of these being Hemingway's novel and also the title of a well known Metallica song.

Answer: Stand and stare

Davies was a Welsh poet and tramp, born in the latter part of the nineteenth century. He led an eventful life losing half his leg in a train accident whilst on the way to the Klondike, Canada, which led him to become a poet. The poem was part of an anthology entitled 'Songs of Joy and Others' published in 1911.
His story can be read in his book 'The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp', the work from which the British prog rock band 'Supertramp' took their name.

Answer: The Listeners

Walter de la Mare was a well-loved English poet born in 1873. He was noted for his child-like use of imagination in his poetry. 'The Listeners' came from a collection of poems of the same name and has a slightly ghostly theme. De la Mare also wrote ghost stories and children's literature.
