Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What happened when the guards cornered Wisty in her bedroom?

Answer: She disappeared

In the first sign of her powers, Wisty became invisible. The guards worried about where she had gone. She didn't even know that she was invisible. When her mom yelled at her to run away, Wisty called out "Mom!" She became visible and was captured right afterward.
2. The supernatural kids were allowed one personal item each. Which items did they pick?

Answer: A blank book and a drumstick

Wisty was given a drumstick as she was being dragged away from her home. She had no idea why. Whit received a book that had no writing contained within its pages. After some experimentation, Wisty discovered she could cast spells with her drumstick. Whit realized he could read a large variety of comforting magazines in his magical book. Wisty told him that different books showed up for her. Late in the story, the drumstick turned into a wand and the journal became a book of useful spells.
3. Why was Wisty happy when she was taken to the General Bowen State Psychiatric Hospital?

Answer: She thought she was crazy and could be cured

After being taken from her home in the middle of the night, being interrogated, and getting the death sentence, Wisty saw the psychiatric hospital and thought she had imagined it all in her craziness. Whit worried about her because she was half-smiling. She even asked one of the guards when she would meet her doctor.
4. What happened to Whit's girlfriend?

Answer: She was kidnapped

Celia and Whit were dating when she suddenly disappeared. She vanished six months before the book began. During the siblings' ordeal, Celia visited Whit in his dreams and offered him comfort and gave him advice. Eventually Whit discovered that she had been murdered.
5. Which of the following was not used to describe the pale man who visited the kids during their time in the hospital?

Answer: Whippy

The man called himself "The Visitor." He wore a black hooded robe, which made Wisty think of Death when she saw him. He explained that there were anti-spell devices placed throughout the Hospital. When Whit teased the man, he pulled out a whip and smacked his face. Later on Whit called him "The One With The Bullwhip," a knock against the New Order and its founders, who called themselves by such names as "The One Who Judges" and "The One Who Is The One."
6. Which of the following powers did Wisty exhibit first?

Answer: Invisibility

She turned invisible right at the beginning of the story. Right as she was being taken away from her house, she burst into flames and had to be doused with water- she grew flames often in the novel. When the siblings entered their room at the Hospital, her skin turned green, allowing them to see the room they'd been thrown in.
7. What punishment were the siblings given by The Visitor?

Answer: They had to clean their bathroom with a toothbrush

The kids talked back to The Visitor, and they were punished for it. He angered Wisty enough to make her fire power grow, and she realized he feared the flames. While they were cleaning their bathroom with the toothbrush, Whit accidentally found a portal into Shadowland.
8. Which of the following rebels betrayed the witch and wizard?

Answer: Jonathon

Sasha lied to the siblings, but it was in the name of justice. He needed their help saving the kidnapped children. It was Jonathon who betrayed the group. He was an informant for the New Order.
9. While imprisoned, a small girl offered Wisty some comfort. Which profound statement was said that motivated the young witch?

Answer: "They're afraid of you."

Wisty had momentarily lost her powers and was feeling very low. Then a small girl reached her arm through the prison bars and told her "They're afraid of you. They're afraid of all of us." Wisty was touched that the emaciated girl had the courage to hope. It motivated her and gave her the strength to free the children.
10. What happened to Wisty after she held her fire power for too long?

Answer: Her hair changed color

Wisty had always had red hair. After she allowed flames to rise out of her skin, she momentarily passed out. When she came to, her hair had changed to auburn, just like her mother's. When she turned her fire power on, she frightened the guards away from the prison and allowed her to burn the prison down.
