Answer: John Reed

He told her John had gotten into debt and sent to jail a few times. Mrs. Reed helped him out, but it was ruining their wealth. After his death, Mrs. Reed fell into a stroke. She regained consciousness, and wanted to talk to Jane, so Robert came to get her.
2. What time of day did Mr. Rochester propose to Jane?

Answer: dusk

They were in the garden. Jane thought he was making fun of her, but he was serious. He had liked her all along. He pretended to prepare for a marriage with Blanche Ingram to find out if Jane really truly loved him. Even so, Blanche had already called off the marriage because Mr. Rochester was not as rich as she thought he was.
3. What was the name of the attorney from London who came with Mr. Mason to break up the marriage of Mr. Rochester and Jane?

Answer: Briggs

Jane learned that Mr. Rochester has a wife, Bertha Mason, who is locked up in Thornfield Hall. Grace Poole is her caretaker.

Mason found out about their marriage because Jane had written to her uncle in Madeira to tell him that she was marrying Mr. Rochester. Mason was with him when he got the letter, and came immediately with Briggs.

Mr. Rochester's father and elder brother wanted him to marry her because of the money. The former didn't want to split his own money between the two, and didn't want his younger son to be poor. That's why he basically forced the marriage.

St. John Rivers was the brother of Diana and Mary. Later we find out that they are actually first cousins of Jane!

John Eyre left Jane 20,000 pounds, but she only kept 5,000 pounds. The rest, she divided up with her cousins, Diana, Mary, and St. John.

Answer: Mr. Granby

It must have broken St. John's heart. He liked her, but didn't want to marry her, because the life of a missionary's wife would not suit her. She would be too weak.
8. What language did St. John want Jane to learn?

Answer: Hindostanee

He wanted to marry her so she could go with him to India. By the way, it is now spelled Hindustani. It can also be called Hindi. It is an official language, and is spoken by at least 30 percent of India.

Answer: on the marriage license of Mr. Rochester and Bertha Mason

The butler told Jane that Mr. Rochester is now missing one eye and blind in the other. He is also missing one hand. Jane was actually relieved! She was happy that he hadn't gone crazy like his wife.

Answer: Yes

He can't see very well, but he can get around without having to be helped.
