Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How does Malerick, the "Vanished Man," address his imaginary audience?

Answer: "Revered Audience"

Every time the reader learns what the illusionist thinks, Malerick begins his 'speech' with "Revered Audience," as if explaining the tricks he's about to perform.
2. Who is the first victim of the "Conjurer," as Rhyme's team calls him?

Answer: Svetlana Rasnikov

The first victim is Svetlana Rasnikov, a student at the Manhattan School of Music and Performing Arts. It is there that Malerick uses the "Vanished Man" routine. Nancy Ausonio and Diane Franciscovich are the first two officers at the scene.
3. What is Sachs busy with when we first meet her this time?

Answer: taking the Detective Sergeant exam

Sachs has applied for a promotion for Detective Sergeant. We meet her right in the middle of the practical exam. She passes it gloriously, only to find a new and, in the words of Lon Sellitto, very "bizarre" murder case waiting for her.
4. Lincoln Rhyme calls a well-known character from another Deaver novel for help. Whom?

Answer: Parker Kincaid ("The Devil's Teardrop")

A nice little extra for Deaver regulars.... Some of you may remember that there was a similar scene in "The Devil's Teardrop," where Parker calls Lincoln to ask him a question. Here, Lincoln needs Parker's help to explain how a signature made in sight of the guard at the door could disappear without a trace. Parker tells him that the killer "Ex-laxed" the signature, using disappearing ink.
5. While canvassing all magic supply stores, Sachs gets to know Kara, a young, aspiring illusionist who works and studies with David Balzac, a retired illusionist. What is the name of Balzac's store?

Answer: Smoke & Mirrors

We never learn Kara's real name. She offers Sachs her help, and Sachs and Lincoln make her their unofficial consultant. She is of great help to them during the case.
6. What is the name of the circus that is in town?

Answer: Cirque Fantastique

The Cirque Fantastique, headed by Edward Kadensky, plays a major role in this story.
7. What is the (unofficial) name of the team of officers that Roland Bell is heading?

Answer: S.W.A.T.

... an abbreviation of "Saving the Witness's Ass Team."
8. Which routine does Malerick use to kill Cheryl Marston (or rather, in the attempt to do so)?

Answer: The Water Torture Cell

He uses Houdini's famous routine, but Cheryl Marston can be rescued. It is at this crime scene, at the Harlem River, that Sachs detains a trespasser to the crime scene - something that later turns out to be quite a mistake.
9. What is the method an illusionist uses to distract the attention of the audience?

Answer: misdirection

"Misdirection" is the keyword in this mystery. As we learn later, there are all in all four "misdirections" Malerick used to keep the police away from him.
10. What is the name of the assistant D.A. who appears to be the real target of the killer?

Answer: Charles Grady

The Patriot Assembly, a right-wing militia, apparently paid Malerick $100,000 to kill Grady.
11. Malerick pays Rhyme a visit when Lincoln expects it least. During their conversation, how does he refer to Cheryl Marston?

Answer: "the equestrian"

He also tells Rhyme that he killed those people not for what they really were but for what they represented: a musician, a make-up artist, an equestrian.... Rhyme and his team deduce that he is after the circus.
12. What was Malerick's stage name when he was a kid performing in Las Vegas?

Answer: Young Houdini

There, in Vegas, he met his future mentor, Erick Weir.
13. Kara tells Balzac about the killer and his M.O., and Balzac comes up with a name. Which one?

Answer: Erick Weir

Balzac knows everyone in the business, so Kara asks him whether he can think of someone who is familiar with the many different routines from different areas the killer used. Balzac remembers Erick Weir.
14. On which classic does Kara base her performance at Balzac's shop?

Answer: Ovid's "Metamorphoses"

Kara delivers a fantastic show, referring all the time to change - metamorphosis. Lincoln, Amelia and Thom all attend.
15. Malerick gets arrested at the D.A.'s place, but he can escape from custody. How?

Answer: he fakes a shooting and pretends to be dead

Malerick manages to get the cuffs off, goes for the gun of an officer, and then pretends to have been shot. In the following chaos, he can easily sneak out.
16. Malerick's true goal is it to get Andrew Constable out of prison.

Answer: False

He is paid for getting Constable out, but his true target is the circus, after all. This is his most brilliant misdirection - he made Lincoln and the others believe he wanted to draw attention to the circus in order to do something else when in fact he really wants to take his revenge on the circus. He clearly pointed his target out to everyone, but they didn't believe him....
17. Who is Malerick?

Answer: Arthur Loesser

One of the numerous twists is that the killer actually is not Erick Weir - he just pretended to be. Thus, he was arrested and booked as Erick Weir, and when he escaped, everyone was looking for Weir, of course. But in fact he is Arthur Loesser, one of the late Weir's assistants.
18. How does Lincoln jokingly refer to himself throughout this story?

Answer: "The Immobilized Man"

Several times, Lincoln refers to himself as "The Immobilized Man."
19. What happens to Kara in the end?

Answer: she leaves Balzac and gets a job at the circus

Rhyme, Bell and Kara make up a plot to convince Edward Kadesky that Kara is a very gifted illusionist. The plan works, and Kadesky offers Kara a job. Kara, who has always thought that she was not ready for the stage, understands that she has to free herself from Balzac's influence. She has seen in Arthur Loesser how much a mentor can mesmerize his protégé.
20. What promotion does Amelia get in the end?

Answer: Detective third grade

The congressman she had detained at the Harlem River crime scene was so angry at her that he demanded she be suspended without pay for one year. He pulls some strings, but fortunately, Sach's boss won't accept a suspension. He pulls some strings as well, and Sachs gets at least a promotion to detective third grade. She can even keep her old badge number: 5885. In the end, Sachs returns to her current crime scene: two victims, both shot in the head, and both are missing their right shoes....
