Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old is Dusty Miller at the beginning of the book?

Answer: Eleven

'Dusty Miller was eleven. It was easy for Johnny to say 'Look sharp, Dusty,' and little Dusty looked sharp.'
2. On which day was the port of Boston closed?

Answer: June 1st, 1774

King George, furious about the tea in Boston harbor, closed Boston's port. This was meant to cripple the city, because it relied on the port. It did, however, make the country furious, even Tories, and more people than ever talked Revolution. And the rest of the thirteen colonies helped Boston get through the next winter.
3. How many shillings did the Observers 'owe' on the Sunday Sam Adams came with a paper for Rab to set?

Answer: Eight shillings

This meant that they would meet at the Observer that night at eight. Johnny made the rounds, even though it was a Sunday.
4. After Cilla went to work for the Lytes and came to visit Johnny, how long did Rab take walking her home?

Answer: One hour, forty-seven minutes

Johnny was mad. Rab, who took one hour and forty-seven minutes to walk Cilla home, had been fed by the cook, and thought Cilla was a grand kid.
5. Which inn is situated near the Observer's office?

Answer: Afric Queen

This is where the British soldiers stay, and where Johnny glutted himself after receiving the money from John Hancock.
6. Which Major demanded, 'Disperse, ye rebels!'?

Answer: Major Pitcairn

Major Pitcairn was an actual historical person like most of the people in this book. He also really said 'Disperse, ye rebels!'. The rebels did not disperse.
7. Fill in the blank: 'So that a man can__up.'

Answer: Stand

This is the theme of the book. It's spoken by James Otis (who Sam Adams thinks is crazy), and has a marked effect on Johnny. It's because of this that, at the end of the book, he lets Dr. Warren operate on his hand.
8. What kind of gem did Merchant Lyte (supposedly) break a tooth on?

Answer: A ruby

Johnny entertained Isannah with stories about Merchant Lyte. This was one of them. He claimed that the cook mistook a ruby for a currant and put it in a fruitcake and that was why Lyte had a chipped front tooth.
9. Who organized the Boston spy system?

Answer: Paul Revere

10. What was the name of Sam Adams' African-American maid?

Answer: Sukey

Sukey accidentally threw a bucket of dirty dish water onto Johnny, but Johnny counted ten and she apologized, dried his clothes, and gave him pie.
11. What card was Lavinia Lyte going to be at a masquerade (Isannah was going to be a two and hold her train) with British officers?

Answer: Queen of Spades

Cilla brought in Johnny to make Lavinia a scepter. Johnny was thrown out shortly thereafter, having tipped Isannah over (with hardly anything on) and insulted her.
12. What was the name of Madge's sergeant?

Answer: Sergeant Gale

13. What color horse pulls John Hancock's carriage?

Answer: Gray

This is mentioned just before Johnny goes to John Hancock for a job.
14. What was the name of the lieutenant who whacked Rab on the head with his sword for daring to touch British weapons?

Answer: Lieutenant Bragg

Rab was looking for a decent gun at this point in the book. He had the audacity to touch one of the British guns. The lieutenant who was guarding it broke off his conversation with the girls for long enough to whack him on the head with the flat of his sword, then kept on talking.
15. We'll end with an easy one: Which of these four Revolutionary war personages did NOT ride to warn the countryside the night before the war started?

Answer: Sam Adams
