Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story centres around a murder that happened 20 years earlier and has never been solved. What was the name of the murdered girl?

Answer: Janie Ingalls

This was Detective Milo Sturgis's first unsolved case; shortly after he started investigating it he had been reassigned. Twenty years later Alex receives the book in the mail that has a crime scene photo in it. This bought back unpleasant memories for Milo and a new resolve to find out who did it.
2. What colour was "The Murder Book" that was sent to Alex?

Answer: Blue

The book was a three ring binder in blue leather. The words "The Murder Book" were centred on the front cover in gold letters; it contained photographs of 43 victims taken at crime scenes.
3. Janie had gone to a party the night she was murdered with a friend called Melinda Waters, who hadn't been heard of since. After much sleuthing Alex and Milo track her down and fly off to interview her. Where was Melinda living?

Answer: Sante Fe

Melinda had been with Janie at the party, but lost sight of her and ended up hitching a lift to another party at a beach. She never went back home and drifted around for ten years before getting it together. She had always wondered what had happened to Janie and hadn't known she was dead until Milo told her.
4. Milo's original partner on the Janie Ingalls case was Detective Schwinn who was forced into early retirement. Milo suspects that it was he who had sent Alex the book. When they traced him through his retirement cheques and went to visit him, his widow informed them that he had died 7 months earlier. What had caused his death?

Answer: A fall from a horse.

Pierce Schwinn had been forced to retire from the police force as he was a drug addict. After some hard times he met his second wife Marge and they were living happily on a horse farm until his death.
5. Where was Pierce and Marge Schwinn's horse farm?

Answer: Ojai

Beverly Glen is where Alex and his partner Robin Castagna have custom built their new home, complete with a large fishpond and Japanese garden. Alex is finding it very lonely living there while Robin is on tour.
6. As the story starts Alex and Robin have flown to Europe for a short break. Alex had planned it as a surprise trip to make up to her for some silly things he had done in his previous case. What European city did they stay in?

Answer: Paris

They had only been in Paris a couple of days when Robin announced she was going on the "Kill Famine" music tour for three months. This ruined their stay and Robin flew back alone to get ready for the tour.
7. Robin was invited on the music tour for her skills. What was she skilled at?

Answer: Luthiery

Robin is a luthier who makes and repairs guitars and other stringed instruments. She was needed on the tour to oversee and repair the band's equipment.
8. Alex's 1979 Cadillac Seville plays a large part in this book, what colour is the car?

Answer: Green

Alex uses the car as a means of getting to talk to Vance Coury, the owner of Concourse Auto Restorers and murder suspect. Alex suggests that Vance turn it into a convertible; Vance laughs at him and refuses to take it on. Later on the car has a homing device planted on it and that leads the bad guys to Alex.
9. While they were at college, the main suspects in this case were in a group called "The King's Men". One of the members was Nicholas Hansen who became reasonably famous. What was he famous for?

Answer: Oil Painting

Nicholas had been away from Los Angeles for most of the last twenty years; he returned three years ago to nurse his sick mother. Alex and Milo's interview with him was a major part in solving the case. His paintings sell for around $40,000.
10. Alex's old friend and colleague, psychiatrist Dr Wilbert Harrison has a rare form of colour blindness which means he can only see one colour range. What colour is it?

Answer: Purple

His house is painted purple; he wears purple and crimson clothes and has a pinkie ring with a huge violet cabochon in it. He is the doctor of both Pierce and Marge Schwinn (he was the reason they met each other). Another patient of his, ex drug addict Willy Burns plays a major role in the case.
