Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who defeated Pompey at the battle of Pharsalus a few years before the play opens?

Answer: Caesar

This is not actually in the play, it's just a little background information. Caesar is the one who defeated Pompey in a battle for military supremacy that led to Caesar's position of power at the start of the play.
2. According to Shakespeare, how many times is Caesar stabbed?

Answer: 33 times

Caesar is killed in Act III by all the conspirators. He was stabbed by all of them multiple times. Although Octavius says there were 33 wounds, history is not clear - the more generally-accepted figure is 23. Still a lot of stabbing!
3. Where does Caesar's ghost tell Brutus to meet him?

Answer: Philippi

The ghost of Caesar tells Brutus this the first time he sees it. Brutus actually goes to Philippi, responding to the ghost's command.
4. Who was the last person to stab Caesar?

Answer: Brutus

It is actually Brutus, Caesar's almost loyal friend, who was the last person to end Caesar's life. Caesar was shocked to see Brutus stabbing him, thus his last few words were "Et tu, Brute?"
5. Who is the first person to approach the conspirators after the deed is done?

Answer: Antony's servant

It is actually Antony's servant that approached the conspirators; he was asking for permission to Antony to come and speak with them. He didn't actually see the body of Caesar until later on when all conspirators left and Antony was about to go out to give the eulogy.
6. When reading the play, what tells us that Antony is really outraged by the death of Caesar?

Answer: he has a soliloquy

Antony's soliloquy tells us everything, even the revenge he plans to take over Brutus and the conspirators. By the way, a soliloquy is a speech given on stage by one person and they tell us their thoughts and feelings about what is going on.
7. What are Caesar's last words before he dies? (not the ghost)

Answer: "Then fall Caesar."

These words were after what he said to Brutus. "Et tu, Brute?" means "not you too Brutus, then there's no hope"..."Then fall Caesar" (I give up.)
8. What are the people who want Caesar dead called?

Answer: conspirators

The group of people who want Caesar to die are called conspirators; they all think that Caesar is a premature ruler and could become a great dictator if left alone. Cassius thought this and then manipulated Brutus in this act and they formed the conspiracy to plan the death of Julius Caesar.
9. Who was the first person who wanted Caesar dead? Why?

Answer: Cassius; jealous he was going to become king

Cassius is a great manipulator in this play. The reason he wants to get rid of Caesar is that from the start he did not like the fact that he was becoming king. He then convinced Brutus to go against him and because he was right about Caesar becoming the dictator, Brutus thought it over and decided that if it's for the good of Rome, he'll do it.
10. Who motivated Brutus to go into the conspiracy, and how do we know when Brutus finally decides?

Answer: Cassius; he gives a long soliloquy on his decision

I hope you didn't choose Cinna the Poet because he isn't even a conspirator! It was Cassius because Brutus is really loyal to Caesar and the conspirators needed him. Cassius makes Brutus feel guilty about his choice and lets him take his time to decide. Brutus reveals his decision with a soliloquy on stage.
11. What was Brutus' mistake in the play after the deed is done?

Answer: he gives Antony permission to speak in the eulogy

The moment Antony is permitted to speak at the eulogy, that's the turning point in the play. Brutus is too open minded and naive to see the danger that Antony is once he is allowed to speak. Cassius on the other hand sees what's going to happen.
12. How is Octavius related to Caesar?

Answer: adopted son

Octavius was adopted by Caesar, as we already know. At the moment while Caesar's assassination takes place, he is on the way to Rome not knowing a thing about his father's murder, but Antony calls him before he arrives about his plan of revenge.
13. What was the soothsayer's conversation with Caesar about at the very beginning of Act III?

Answer: the ides of March have come, but not gone

In the beginning of Act III, Caesar has a talk with the soothsayer (fortune teller); he tells him that is already the ides of March (which is March 15) and nothing bad has happened. The soothsayer says "but not gone." as if "not yet"...
14. Who killed Cinna the Poet? Why?

Answer: plebeians; they thought he was Cinna the conspirator

This is the last scene of Act III. Cinna the Poet was walking in the crowd with plebeians, and one commoner asked him where he was going; Cinna the Poet said to Caesar's house, the other said as a friend or an enemy? Cinna the Poet answers a friend why and the plebeian asked what his name was.

He answered Cinna. The plebeian goes crazy because he thought he was a conspirator and was against Caesar and mistakenly killed him.
15. How did Brutus's wife, Portia, die?

Answer: she swallowed fire

Portia swallowed fire because she was impatient about Brutus's absence. Also, she was full of despair because of the triumvirate taking over and controlling all of Rome, so she swallowed coal to commit suicide.
