1. What element of the plot does the word 'Junk' refer to?

Answer: Drug used by the characters

The plot is centered around two teenagers who run away from home and become heroin addicts after being taken into a squat. Themes in the book such as heroin addiction made the book very controversial when it was released.
2. Why does Gemma run away with Tar?

Answer: She wants to escape life with her parents

Gemma, the main character, runs away after she has an argument with her parents. She feels that they are too controlling of her life and wants to run away with Tar as her parents 'needed to be taught a lesson'. Tar runs away because his father abuses him.
3. What is the name of the tobacco shop owner who helps Tar after he runs away?

Answer: Mr Skolly

Mr Skolly feels compelled to help Tar when they first meet. He introduces Tar to Richard, who opens abandoned buildings as squats. Richard gives Tar a place to stay in. 'David' is Tar's real name and 'Brogen' is Gemma's last name.
4. What do Richard and Vonny first describe themselves as?

Answer: Anarchists

Richard, Vonny, Tar, Gemma and Jerry all dress up to create anarchy in a high street by glueing the locks on bank doors and posting 'stick up' cards through the letter boxes. Gemma begins to get bored of living with Richard and Vonny after this.
5. How does Gemma meet Lily and Rob?

Answer: A house-warming party

Richard throws a house-warming party to celebrate the opening of another squat. Gemma is fascinated whe she sees Lily dancing at the party and begins talking to her. Lily and her boyfriend are heroin addicts and invite Gemma and Tar back to their house. This is the start of Tar and Gemma's addiction.
6. What does Rob find in a skip that he gives to Tar?

Answer: Book plates of flowers

Rob likes to go through skips to find wood to burn for fuel. He invites Tar to join him and they find book plates of flowers. Later, Tar sees a book of art-photographs in a bookstore which Rob shoplifts for him.
7. What flower is mentioned throughout the book?

Answer: Dandelions

After Tar leaves home and Gemma calls, he sees a mass of dandelions on the side of the road. They inspire him to paint one large dandelion. After Rob steals an art-photograph book for Tar, they spread dandelions around it. Also, Tar and Gemma call each other 'Dandelion'. One edition of the book has a dandelion-tipped syringe on the front cover.
8. What has happened to Alan and Helen when Lily, Rob and Gemma visit them?

Answer: They have both died

When Rob, Lily, Gemma and Tar run out of drugs, they visit Alan and Helen. Both have overdosed on high-strength heroin and died. Even then, the four are not concerned about their addiction. They steal the remaining drugs and go home.
9. Where do the four (Rob, Gemma, Lily and Tar) go to try and stop taking drugs?

Answer: A countryside farm

Lily becomes pregnant and all four move away to the countryside. They stay in a farm in an attempt to become 'clean' but they have all taken drugs with them and end up fighting. They go back home after the first night.

Answer: Tar

Gemma tells Tar that she will split up with him if he dosen't stop taking drugs. The therapy doesn't work and Tar tries to move in with Richard.
