Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Throughout "The Name of the Wind" and "The Wise Man's Fear", how many lashes in total does Kvothe receive from the University?

Answer: 9

Kvothe is whipped on two occasions throughout the first two books. The first is three lashes for "reckless use of sympathy" charged by Master Hemme, the second is six lashes for malfeasance when he calls the name of the wind against Ambrose.
2. What flower does Kvothe finally compare Denna to during "The Name of the Wind"?

Answer: Selas

Denna comments that all men have "read from the same book" and think roses are the only flower women want. Kvothe toys with calling her a dandelion but decides on the selas, a flower Denna has never seen. Denna tells Kvothe that the willow blossom matches him best.
3. We are told several things about Denna's patron throughout both "The Name of the Wind" and "The Wise Man's Fear". Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Plays Tak

Although many people suspect Bredon to be Denna's patron, it is never explicitly stated. Denna tells Kvothe that her patron is surprisingly light on his feet and doesn't think any of her suitors are good enough from her. It is from the Cthaeh that we learn that Denna's patron beats her with his walking stick.
4. Kvothe is given the name Maedre by Magwyn in Ademre during "The Wise Man's Fear". What does this word in Ademic NOT mean?

Answer: Speaker

Vashet tells Kvothe that his name means "flame, and thunder, and broken tree." These three things not only describe his dealings with the bandits literally, but are also motifs throughout both novels.
5. During Kvothe's collection of court gossip in the service of Maer Alveron during "The Wise Man's Fear" he learns that Bredon has supposedly done what?

Answer: performed pagan rituals

Kvothe learns from the Cthaeh that the Maer is close to the Amyr but we are not told in what way. From court gossip, Kvothe hears it is Lord Veston who was addicted to denner resin. While it is true that Bredon has been taking dance lessons, Kvothe learns this from Bredon himself, not through court gossip.
6. What does NOT accurately describe how Kvothe kills the bandits at their camp in "The Wise Man's Fear"?

Answer: Naming

Kvothe uses sympathy to injure the bandits, break their bow strings, and draw the lightning to the large central tree. Using sympathy to harm other humans is the definition of malfeasance. Both Tempi and Shehyn refer to Kvothe's actions as being "blood magic".

Although many of the tavern stories about this particular exploit refer to a "Taborlin the Great" style of magic, it is unarguably clear that Kvothe uses no names to defeat the bandits.
7. According to Bast in "The Wise Man's Fear", which group is charged with keeping the Cthaeh from having interaction with anyone?

Answer: The Sithe

"If anyone manages to come in contact with the Cthaeh, the Sithe kills them. They kill them from a half-mile off with their long horn bows. Then they leave the body to rot. If a crow so much as lands on the body, they kill it too." (Bast in "The Wise Man's Fear")

Also, it is interesting to note that, after killing Kvothe's parents in "The Name of the Wind," Haliax rhetorically asks his companions, "Who keeps you safe from the Amyr, the Singers, the Sithe, from all that would harm you in the world?"
8. Which of the townsfolk in Newarre are injured in ways that Kvothe feels responsible for in "The Name of the Wind" and "The Wise Man's Fear"?

Answer: Carter, Shep

Carter gets attacked by the Scrael near the beginning of the "The Name of the Wind" but doesn't die. Shep is the first to attack the "demon in the mercenaries skin" during "The Wise Man's Fear" and dies because of it. This only increases the guilt that we see Kvothe display throughout the course of the interludes in both books.
9. Which master at the university is correctly paired with their subject below?

Answer: Mandrag - Alchemy

Arwyl is the master physicker, Hemme teaches Rhetoric, and Brandeur is the master arithmetician. This information is mentioned during admissions exams in both "The Name of the Wind" and "The Wise Man's Fear".
10. The name Ferule refers to which character?

Answer: Cinder

Shehyn tells Kvothe in "The Wise Man's Fear" that the Adem remember the names of the Rhinta, or Chandrian. According to them, one of these names is "Ferule chill and dark of eye." This matches Kvothe's description of Cinder. Furthermore, after Kvothe's parents are killed by the Chandrian in "The Name of the Wind", Haliax shows his power over Cinder by calling him Ferula, possibly his true name.
