Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To kick off the quiz, I shall start with a quote from the very first line of the poem: "On either side the river lie/ Long fields of _____ and of _____"

Answer: barley, rye

Right from the onset of the poem, Tennyson paints the scene in such a way that enables the mind to picture exactly where this takes place. It has indeed inspired many artists to create their own rendition of what they imagine the setting to look like.
2. Which word is missing? "And thro' the field the road runs by/ To many tower'd _______"

Answer: Camelot

Camelot, the legendary home of the mighty King Arthur has never been officially discovered, but the magic and mystery surrounding it have made it a popular legend even to our time.
3. Which flower completes the couplet?: "And up and down the people go, gazing where the _______ blow"

Answer: lillies

This poem has such a sad connotation; this line delivers the message that the lady is trapped in her tower, while the rest of the world is able to go and walk around in the beautiful flowers.
4. What two trees are missing from this line: "_______ whiten, _______ quiver"?

Answer: willows, aspens

When a willow whitens, this means that the wind has blown strongly enough to reveal the underside of the leaves, a whitish colour. This use of imagery, having the wind pushing the "wave that runs for ever", seems like it is pushing the lady to flow with it to Camelot, the home of her soon to be discovered love, Sir Lancelot.
5. What colour is missing? "Four _____ walls and four _____ towers"

Answer: grey

Showing, perhaps, the strength of the castle, with its fortified stone walls, the grey contrasts with the "space of flowers" in the following line.
6. "By the margin, ______ veil'd/ Slide the heavy barges trail'd" Fill in the missing word.

Answer: willow

Willows come up a few times in this poem, likely because of weeping willows, indicating again the sadness of the Lady in the tower.
7. "But who hath seen her wave her hand?/ Or at the ______ seen her stand?"

Answer: casement

The Lady is never seen by the rest of the world, they only know of her thanks to her singing. "Only reapers, reaping early/ In among the bearded barley/ Hear a song that echoes cheerly." Her curse does not allow her to look out upon the world unless through the distortion of a mirror.
8. "From the river winding ______/ down to tower'd Camelot"

Answer: clearly

The roads all lead to Camelot, an even the river around the island of Shalott seems to be going in the same direction. Why would the Lady in the tower not wish to go to Camelot, as everything else does?
9. "And by the moon the reaper weary/ Piling leaves in uplands airy/ Listens, whispers, "'Tis the ______/Lady of Shalott.'"

Answer: fairy

Since the reapers can hear only her singing, she takes on a mystical quality, becoming a fairy in their eyes.
10. The last question is not a quotes question, but in fact on one of the many pieces of artwork based on this poem. Which artist painted three well-known paintings of the lady, once with blonde hair, and twice with brown?

Answer: Waterhouse

John Waterhouse first painted the lady as she is letting loose her chain to send her down the stream to Camelot in 1888. He next painted her as she was looking out the window at Sir Lancelot in 1894. His last painting of the Lady was in 1917, showing her putting out her hair in a bright red dress. I hope you enjoyed this quiz!
