Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the first American President to write a novel?

Answer: Carter

Jimmy Carter wrote "The Hornet's Nest". It's set in the South during the American Revolution.
2. Which President wrote "My Six Crises"?

Answer: Nixon

He writes about Alger Hiss, Checkers, etc. There would be more crises - and bigger ones - after the book was written.
3. In the Pulitzer Prize winning "Profiles in Courage", President Kennedy described several political "heroes". One hero saved the presidency of Andrew Johnson with his impeachment vote. Who was he?

Answer: Edmund G. Ross

Ross could have voted to dump Johnson, but didn't do so - on principle. Johnson survived the attempt to dump him - by one vote.
4. This President wrote the poem "Memory" (among others) which begins: "My childhood home I see again ..."

Answer: Lincoln

It's actually a rather nice poem.
5. This popular New York City mayor didn't write a Broadway play - but he was the subject of one.

Answer: La Guardia

La Guardia's first name was "Fiorello"; that was also the name of a popular Broadway musical (loosely) based on him. ("A Little Tin Box" is the best number in the show.)
6. This shadowy political figure also wrote spy novels.

Answer: E Howard Hunt

Hunt's name pops up during Watergate and also during the days of the Kennedy assassination. Intriguing fellow.
7. Lew Wallace, author of "Ben-Hur" enjoyed a political career after his days as a soldier in the civil war. In what capacity?

Answer: Territorial governor

Wallace fought in the civil war and served on the military panel that dealt with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Later, this territorial governor (of New Mexico) wrote "Ben-Hur".
8. Which of these members of Nixon's team wrote the novel "The Company"?

Answer: Ehrlichmann

It may have been written (in part) to help with the legal fees that he incurred during the worst days of the Nixon presidency. It was advertised as "the book only John Ehrlichmann could write"; hopefully, it was also "the book that only John Ehrlichmann will read".
9. Which member of President Kennedy's "team" wrote "The Tragedies and Lessons of Vietnam"?

Answer: McNamara

Robert McNamara was Kennedy's Secretary of Defense.
10. This president wasn't a popular novelist - but his daughter was.
