He and the Colonel helped Alaska to drive out of the campus, so they thought that they would be held responsible for her death, since they did not prevent her from driving drunk.

The Colonel and Pudge set out to unravel the mysteries of Alaska's death later on.

Alaska talks about her mother's death when the group is in the barn and playing a game that she invented. Her mother died of an aneurysm. She was paralysed by fear so much that she didn't think to dial 911 when she saw her mother struggling in the kitchen.
