Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Piggy is a bespectacled character, but what do his glasses symbolise (when they are whole)?

Answer: Clearsightedness, knowledge

Piggy's glasses symbolise the fact that he alone is able to see things for what they are on the island; for example, when the boys ask him what the mirage is, he is able to tell them.
2. Which biblical character does Simon symbolise?

Answer: Jesus

Simon, a member of the choir, is often portrayed as an ethereal character, with obvious connotations to Jesus. Simon has a depth about him which means that he is able to work out that the "Beast" does exist, but within them.
3. What does Jack symbolise?

Answer: Autocracy

Out of the available options, Jack is a symbol of autocracy, as he wants total control of the island, and is prepared to use force in order to get it. Because of this, Jack can be seen as an allegory to Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin.
4. What does the signal fire symbolise to Ralph?

Answer: Hope

When the boys light a signal fire, to Ralph it symbolises hope of rescue, as Ralph hopes that passing ships would see its smoke. This is why he is especially annoyed when Jack and the hunters leave the fire unnattended, and it goes out as a ship goes past.
5. What does the conch symbolise (before it is smashed)?

Answer: Order

When Ralph and Piggy discover the shell, they use it to see if there were any other survivors on the island. After discovering that there are survivors, the conch becomes a tool to call meetings and keep order when the boys are talking, as only the person with the conch can speak.
6. What does the conch shell symbolise (after it is smashed)?

Answer: Shattered Order/No Rules

After the conch is smashed, a clear power shift can be observed, more of the boys are deserting Ralph, and leaving to join Jack, and the "Beast" is becoming more prevalent. The conch, when whole, symbolised rules and order, now it is the reverse, and the boys act accordingly.
7. What does the whole novel symbolise?

Answer: The Warfare (WW2)

The book was written as an alternative reality to "Coral Island", in which Golding can portray his idea of what would happen to a group of boys stranded on an island.
It is intended to act as a reminder of the warfare that is occuring in the world, and is an undercurrent throughout the novel.
8. What does Ralph symbolise?

Answer: Democracy

Ralph is a symbol of democracy, and this is demonstrated in his determination to stick by his rules, even when Jack has decided to eliminate him, as his only opposition.
He is democratic in his insistance to keep everyone equal, by the use of the conch in discussions.
9. Which of the National Services rescues the boys?

Answer: Navy

A navy officer rescues the boys, after his ship sees the fire that Jack set, which was engulfing the island. This is ironic because Jack did not want to be rescued, but he has inadvertently lead to the boys' rescue.
10. Who does the Naval Officer symbolise to Ralph?

Answer: His Father- Rescue

Ralph says to Piggy at the beginning of the novel that his father is a Naval Commander, and so the arrival of the Naval Officer on the island made Ralph think of his father. The Naval Officer also symbolises the return to order on the island, and his arrival stops Jack and his tribe dead in their tracks, and Ralph is saved.
