Matt has dark blue eyes, but they are hidden behind silver goggles with orange lenses. In addition to these goggles, he wears a red and black striped shirt, black gloves to his elbows, jeans, black boots, and a cream vest without sleeves. He is often seen smoking.

After L's death, he takes over the Kira investigation. The SPK is not fond of the young successor; thinking of him as rude and having poor social skills. Although he is young, Near is the one who finally outsmarts and defeats Light Yagami: Kira.

Matt's true name is Mail Jeevas, and Near's true name is Nate River. Beyond Birthday's real name is unknown. L's true name is L Lawliet. Unlike his successors, the name he is known by is his true first name.

12. While at Wammy's House, which character is shown to complete an almost completely white puzzle?

Answer: Near

The only part of the puzzle that isn't white is the "L" in the top left corner. When he is shown to be doing this, another child at the Wammy House asks him to play, but he refuses. Shortly after, Roger Ruvie tells both him and Mello that L has died. Near doesn't really react to this, and completes his puzzle before turning it upside down and letting the pieces fall away.

13. Which successor has a thing for strawberry jam?

Answer: Beyond Birthday

Beyond Birthday is seen eating strawberry jam out of a jar with his bare hand. He also keeps several jars of it in his refrigerator. It seems like he is either addicted to it or just craves it.

14. Which character gains a scar on his face during the Kira investigation?

Answer: Mello

When the police get to the Mafia hideout that Mello is staying in, he blows it up in order to avoid capture. His gas mask protected half of his face, but he still developed a large scar the left side of his face.

15. Which successor finally succeeds and becomes the "next L"?

Answer: Near

After taking over the Kira investigation and the SPK, Near is the one who leads Kira to his exposure at a warehouse. In a one-shot special, Near works on an investigation to capture a new Kira; referred to as C-Kira. He has grown taller by this point, and has longer hair and bags under his eyes like L and Beyond Birthday had.

He still wears all white and plays with toys. Near is actually the third L, since Light took over the Kira investigation as the second L for a while.
