Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Bony's full name and rank?

Answer: Napoleon Bonaparte, Detective Inspector

Bony was named such by the people in charge of the orphanage at which he spent his early childhood. Born of an Aboriginal mother and a white father, he could hardly have had a lesser start in life than to be abandoned like that. The character Bony was based on a man Upfield met in his travels. Bonnay is an alias in "Bony and the Kelly Gang", the other two names are from my imagination.
2. In "The Will Of The Tribe", how did Bony approach the campsite of the tribal Aboriginals?

Answer: Bony squatted on his heels fifty yards away and waited for a welcome

"This one asks permission to enter the camp; have him brought in." So said the chief of the tribe. Bony, being part-Aboriginal, was simply being polite, the same as anyone knocking at the door. Those other ways in the question would have had no effect at all on the demeanor of the tribe - they would have dismissed Bony as of no importance.
3. In "Bony and the Kelly Gang", which special festival did the Conway and Kelly families hold every year?

Answer: The Ned Kelly Festival

In the non-existant Cork Valley, there dwelt two large families whose main passions in life seemed to be tax avoidance and the brewing of illicit liquor for sale. Now I'm sure we all like to minimise our taxes, but we don't all commit murder to that end. A most entertaining novel!
4. In "The Mystery of Swordfish Reef", what was the name of Bill Spinks' boat?

Answer: Do-Me

Bill's friends (in the story) would always be chiacking Bill about what innovations he was putting into the boat while building it, to which Bill would reply "well, she'll do me". So when the naming of the boat came about, the Do-Me was a popular suggestion.
5. In the novel "Venom House", what was the 'unofficial' name for the body of water surrounding the house and garden?

Answer: Answerth's Folly

The author here paints a most vivid word picture of a large house and extensive garden surrounded by water and only approachable either by boat or by wading through the knee-deep water. Man-made lake, too!
6. In "Murder Down Under", Bony has some advice for Detective-Sergeant John Muir, which is repeated to other policeman characters in some of the other Upfield books. How does this advice start off?

Answer: Never race Time

Full quote -"Never race Time. Make Time an ally, for Time is the greatest detective that ever was or ever will be." This could be considered as Bony's personal philosophy of crime detection. Patience, patience, patience! This book was originally published as "Mr Jelly's Business" in 1937.
7. In "The Barrakee Mystery", Ralph Thornton asked his father what he should do now that he had finished with college. What was the father's suggestion?

Answer: Join the Church

Thornton's father was only joking! Upfield implies that Thornton senior already knew what his son intended - to join him in running Barrakee station. "The Barrakee Mystery" was Upfield's first published book, in 1928, and was re-published as "Lure of the Bush" in the US in 1965.
8. In "Bushranger of the Skies" who else was in Rex's plane on its last flight?

Answer: Burning Water

Burning Water, chief of the local Aboriginal tribe, sneaked aboard Rex's plane and managed to fight Rex in the air, causing both men to fall out in flight. Burning Water was already in disgrace with his people, and was seeking only to save his friend and brother, McPherson, whom Rex would have killed. A highly readable novel!
9. The story "Bony and the White Savage" names Marvin Rhudder as its chief villian, with murder and rape on his record. What was Rhudder doing before turning to crime?

Answer: Attending theological college

Somewhat like a Jekyll and Hyde transformation, except Rhudder never went back to Jekyll.
10. In the story "Cake in the Hat Box", just what did Kimberley Breen store in the locked hat box?

Answer: Fruit cake and opals

A lockable hat box?! Naturally, if you don't want people pinching your fruitcake, not to mention your black opals.
