Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the drugstore where Jacob works part time, at the beginning of the book?

Answer: Smart Aid

Jacob's mother's family owns the drugstore chain. Jacob is set to inherit part of the company. He persistently tries to get himself fired (to no avail). (Jacob's father is an "amateur ornithologist" and volunteer, not needing to earn money.) Jacob's not too thrilled with the prospect of his future.
2. Grandpa Portman, as he dies in the woods, tells Jacob to "Find the bird. In the loop. On the other side of the old man's grave. September the 3rd, 1940...Emerson - the letter...". Which part of this message does Jacob decrypt first?

Answer: "Emerson - the letter"

Jacob receives the copy of "The Selected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson" on his birthday (which his grandfather had wrapped in advance for him) and finds a letter from Miss Peregrine inside it.
3. Jacob sees his grandfather die; in the months following he suffers from an "acute stress reaction". When his parents insist he see Dr. Golan (a psychiatrist), Jacob is compliant at first, as he believes he needs help, but then he begins to lie to Dr Golan. Why is this?

Answer: Dr. Golan dopes him up 'til he's "fat and stupid"

Dr. Golan persuades Jacob to be more honest with him. The reason he prescribes so many drugs for Jacob is never made clear.
4. Dr. Golan approves Jacob taking a trip with his dad to visit the children's home where Grandpa Portman stayed, in Wales. Local louts Dylan and Worm agree to show Jacob the home. What building do they encourage Jacob to explore first?

Answer: A sheep stable full of dung

The boys laugh until they cry when Jacob emerges complaining and accusing from the suffocatingly fetid stable, and then they tell him how to reach the home and leave him to go by himself. Jacob figures later they left because the home was in no small part smashed up.
5. Jacob follows Emma into the "loop" and meets Miss Peregrine, who, as an ymbryne, can manipulate time and make loops. Why is it significant that ymbrynes can also turn into birds?

Answer: All birds can time travel

All ymbrynes are female. Miss Peregrine has a brother, Caul, who can take the form of a peregrine falcon, but he's unable to alter time. Most wights are male because they were originally peculiars who were resentful of the ymbrynes' power.
6. In Tim Burton's film titled the same as this quiz, Emma can levitate; the eyes of peculiars, especially children, can make hollows evolve into wights; Claire has a backmouth; and Miss Peregrine is in human form when the children leave the island by boat. In the book, only one of these things is true. Do you know which?

Answer: Claire has a backmouth

Of course, Emma can make fire with her hands in the book and Olive has this power in the film. It's the blood of peculiars which affects hollows in the book, and children's not especially. Miss Peregrine is still in bird form when the book ends.
7. As Jacob moves between the time loop of the day in 1940 and the present, he is staying with his dad in the island's only guesthouse and has to lie to get his dad to allow him to make excursions unaccompanied. He claims to have made friends (who don't live in 1940) and his dad discovers he hasn't. Does his dad ever meet any of his actual friends?

Answer: Yes

Emma leaves a letter and photograph of herself with Jacob's grandfather (her ex-beau) for Jacob's dad. Jacob supposes his Dad will quit believing in peculiars quickly after they've gone.
8. The renegade peculiars who became hollows enlisted the help of apparently treacherous ymbrynes for a great experiment. What would have happened if it had gone as hoped?

Answer: The peculiars would have become immortal

The hollowgast (hollows), invisible to all but ones with Abe and Jacob's gift, "tentacle-mawed", soulless, craven and bestial, are what the participants in the experiment became.
Peculiars can live for years in one day, but if they go and hang around in the future, they age to death in hours.
9. Miss Peregrine is birdnapped by wights when they plunder her loop. The children recover a peregrine. For what reason do the children suppose it stays in bird form?

Answer: Miss Peregrine is injured and can't change

Ymbrynes who are injured when they're in bird form can't change form. If they're stuck in bird form for longer than a few days, they'll lose the ability to change back and turn into real birds. Ymbrynes who are injured need to be quickly treated by other ymbrynes to recover and change.
10. Jacob can see invisible things. Can he see Millard?

Answer: No

This is fortuitous, as Millard likes to run around naked sometimes. Millard was not born invisible but slowly began to turn so when he was a child.
