Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When thinking up a name under which to register in the army, she picked "Oliver". Why did Polly choose the pseudonym (fake name) "Oliver"?

Answer: Because of a song

The song that Polly gets the name Oliver from, called "Sweet Polly Oliver", is a real song.
2. Her first night as a soldier, Polly is given some useful advice concerning socks and the placement of them in certain areas, by a mystery voice in the privy. Who gives Polly the advice?

Answer: Sergeant Jackrum

The advice was for rolling them up and stuffing them down one's pants to simulate the propper male "bulkiness". One must wonder, though, how Jackrum learned this.
3. Somehow all of the girls got nicknames on the first night after recruitment. Which of the following is NOT a nickname of one of the girls?

Answer: Shorty

4. During the tavern scene in Plotz a certain person embraces Polly and gets a painful surprise. Who does Polly kick in the unmentionables?

Answer: Prince Heinrich

Polly learned this trick from Gummy Abbens, just like the one for headbutting.
5. All three of these girls were treated very badly at their previous residence, which was the reason that they ran away. Where did Tonker, Lofty and Wazzer run away from to join the army?

Answer: The Girl's Working School

Lofty and Tonker seemed to have always been together ever since they entered the school and ran away together while Wazzer somehow ran away by herself.
6. As is usual, cultural references translate badly and the Borogravian anthem is no exception. What does the Borogravian anthem end with? "The day is a great big_______"

Answer: Fish

This phrase is also the ending of the book.
7. When the girls needed clothes to pretend to be women, Jackrum took them down into the army camp to get some from the Ladies of the Night. What was the exact sign on the house of negotiable affection?

Answer: The SoLid DoVes

"Soiled Doves" was a name for prostitutes, originating in the American west during the 19th century.
-Information taken from "Annotated Pratchet File" v9.0
8. A small phenomenon exibited by Igor led Polly to believe that she was in fact a girl. Igorinas do this less than Igors.

Answer: Lisp

Polly noted that Igor sometimes forgot to lisp. That was the main thing that ticked her off about Igor. Igor also stops lisping a lot after the girls reveal that they are in fact girls.
9. At the end of the book we learn that Jackrum had a son who she left with her grandmother and who grew up to be a very good swordsmith. Sergeant Jackrum had a son in which city?

Answer: Scritz

In the end Jackrum doesn't reveal that she is a woman to anyone but Polly, not even to her own son who thinks that Jackrum is his father. This seems to be because Polly is a second generation Jackrum, just like Tiffany Aching seems to be a second generation Granny Wetherwax.
10. At the end of the book Polly and Maladicta meet two girls who want to join the army for the new war; what were their names?

Answer: Mary and Rosemary

Polly encourages both of the girls to keep their disguises as boys since they get better swearwords, trousers are more comfortable than skirts and, as she had noticed, the socks are an interesting psychological aid.
