Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During rehearsals for "Othello" maddogrick16, LeoDaVinci, Kabel and skunkee disagree on the correct word in the line "To _____ a mischief that is past and gone is the next way to draw new mischief on" from "Othello". Skunkee suggests "born", Kabel says "sworn", Leo thinks it should be "forlorn" while Rick says "mourn". Who is correct?

Answer: maddogrick16 (Rick)

The correct quote "To mourn a mischief that is past and gone is the next way to draw new mischief on" is from Act I Scene III.

The Duke impatiently urges Brabantio to end an argument he has with his daughter, Desdemona, and her husband, Othello. (The Duke had more urgent matters at hand such as the pending Turk invasion!)
2. Continuing with "Othello", OutlookDude delivers his line "The robbed that smiles feels something from the thief" perfectly on cue. However MotherGoose notes "feels" is incorrect. What should it be?

Answer: steals

The Duke continues to advise Brabantio that it is a waste of time to be sad about something that is over and done. Since his bitterness would only bring on more trouble, he should just be happy.
3. In his role as Iago, jonnowales has "rewritten" Shakespeare when he says "It is the green-eyed monster which doth shock the meat it feeds on." Which word is the correct choice to replace "shock"?

Answer: mock

In Act III Scene III of "Othello" Iago, the master manipulator, tells Othello that the fortunate man knows his wife is cheating but the unfortunate man only suspects it and finds himself caught between affection and anxiety. Thus, Iago plants seeds of doubt in Othello's mind about Desdemona's fidelity!
4. Can you help spanishliz, Toeknee448, LadyCaitriona and Wulfsbane finish the quote "We cannot all be masters, nor all masters cannot be truly ________" also from "Othello"?

Answer: followed

In Act I Scene I, during a conversation with Roderigo, Iago expresses his resentment being under Othello's command, and desires revenge for being passed over for promotion. He admits to Roderigo that he is plotting against Othello and he encourages Roderigo to join in.
5. "All that glitters is not gold" has become a popular saying. Pagiedamon notes it is a misquote and the correct line from the "The Merchant of Venice" is "All that glisters is not gold." Is she correct?

Answer: Yes

The popular saying has "evolved" from the original Shakespearean quote.

In Act II Scene VII the Prince of Morocco unfortunately found a skull with a scroll in its empty eye socket inside the gold casket rather than a portrait of Portia. Sadly, for the Prince, superficial beauty was worthless in comparison to the truly precious treasures of love and happiness!
6. While rehearsing the roles of Jessica and Lorenzo in "The Merchant of Venice" austinnene incorrectly recites "But love is blind, and lovers cannot see the pretty jollies that themselves commit". Which word did christopherm say "jollies" should be?

Answer: follies

Jessica is embarrassed because Lorenzo sees her disguised as a boy, but she recognizes that it doesn't affect his love for her. (Act II Scene VI)
7. Mommakat and Gil_Galad, in their roles as Maria and Feste from "The Twelfth Night", are confused. Which word finishes the quote, "Well, God give them wisdom that have it, and those that are fools, let them use their ______"?

Answer: talents

Maria, Olivia's servant, attempted to advise Feste on his "foolery". In his reply he says professional fools, such as he, don't need advice from the "non-professionals". (Act I Scene V)
8. During rehearsals for "Hamlet" Nannanut and root17 need your help completing the line "The lady doth _______ too much, methinks". Which word is correct?

Answer: protest

The saying has come to mean the opposite of its Shakespearean origin. The principal meaning of "protest" in Shakespeare's day was "vow" or "declare solemnly". Nowadays the saying is sometimes used to show insincerity.

In Act III Scene II Hamlet asks his mother, Queen Gertrude, what she thinks of the play he has written. Gertrude says that Player Queen vows so much she loses credibility. Perhaps cynically, Gertrude implies such vows are silly in the first place, and may be indirectly defending her own remarriage.
9. ClaraSue and Bigwoo have forgotten which word completes the line "Therefore, since ______is the soul of wit" from "Hamlet". Which of the following is correct?

Answer: brevity

In Act II, Scene II, while reporting on Hamlet's behavior to the King and Queen (Claudius and Gertrude) Polonius delivered a somewhat lengthy verse about "getting to the point" when imparting wisdom--a clever irony on Shakespeare's part!
10. And last but certainly not least, in his role as the ill-fated King Richard III what word completes jmorrow's line "A _____, a ______, My kingdom for a _______"?

Answer: horse

In Act V Scene IV of the play Richard III is about to meet his doom at the hands of the future Henry VII. Richard's most memorable line is spoken as he valiantly refuses to give up although his horse has already met its end.
