Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The General's Daughter
Answer: Paul Brenner
We first meet Paul Brenner in "The General's Daughter", which was published in 1992. Brenner has a military background and, in this novel, is a member of the Army's Criminal Investigation Division. He is sent to investigate the death of a highly accomplished captain, a daughter of a general. Paramount Pictures released the movie version in 1999 starring John Travolta as Brenner.
2. Plum Island
Answer: John Corey
Detective John Corey first appears in the DeMille universe in "Plum Island", which was published in 1997. In that novel, Corey is recovering from injuries he received on the job with the New York Police Department, when he ends up getting involved in a mystery in a small town on Long Island.
3. The Gold Coast
Answer: John Sutter
John Sutter from "The Gold Coast" is a bit of a departure for DeMille, as Sutter has no background in law enforcement. Instead, he's a lawyer and a member of America's old money class. His life is compared in this story with that of a Mafia don who moves in next door.
4. The Charm School
Answer: Colonel Sam Hollis
Colonel Sam Hollis, like all of DeMille's heroes, is one fearless customer, though he is more taciturn than some of the others. In "The Charm School", which is set in the 1980s, Hollis is working at the American embassy in Moscow. The story involves espionage, hidden agendas, a gulag, scary KGB agents, and betrayal, with a love interest for Hollis thrown in.
5. Up Country
Answer: Paul Brenner
Paul Brenner appears in "Up Country", less of a thriller than DeMille's other novels but more reflective, as it's the story of Brenner, who had fought in the Vietnam War, returning to visit the country. Published in 2002, this story has more autobiographical elements to it than DeMille's others -- DeMille is also a Vietnam veteran.
He returned to Vietnam in 1997, and he turned his reflections into Brenner's more adventurous story.
6. The Lion's Game
Answer: John Corey
"The Lion's Game" is about the search for a highly violent terrorist referred to as "The Lion". One of the people on his tale is John Corey, who at this point is a contractor for the FBI's Terrorist Task Force. This is when he meets the beautiful and brave FBI agent Kate Mayfield.
7. Spencerville
Answer: Keith Landry
In "Spencerville", Keith Landry returns to his home town after 25 years away, the first few while he was a platoon leader in the Vietnam war and the rest as an army intelligence officer. In this story, he returns to face his former girlfriend as well as her corrupt husband. The book was published in 1994.
8. The Gate House
Answer: John Sutter
In "The Gate House", Long Island native John Sutter returns to the Gold Coast to face the elements he left there from his marriage and the Mafia. This sequel portrays how much the Gold Coast changed in just ten years: more older families moving away, more new families moving in, and long-time establishments closing.
9. Word of Honor
Answer: Benjamin Tyson
"Word of Honor" is DeMille's fifth novel. When the book opens, Benjamin Tyson is a successful, intelligent family man who thought his experiences in the Vietnam war were behind him, especially an incident he and his fellow platoon members swore they would never talk about again.
But the truth has a way of coming home to roost, and Benjamin has to face the worst behavior of his men and himself.
10. The Cuban Affair
Answer: Daniel "Mac" MacCormick
Mac Macormick is a highly-decorated former soldier who fought in Afghanistan. When the story opens, he has left military life to pilot a boat for tourists in Florida. The story follows what happens when he agrees to help Cuban-Americans travel to Cuba to seize assets they consider theirs.
There's a humorous subplot where DeMille includes himself in the story, a cranky writer visiting the country, who ate too much bacon.
