She lives about half a day's walk from the town and calls herself Paksenarrion Dorthansdotter of Three Firs. Her father calls her Pakse; she doesn't want that connection anymore, so when the recruiting officer asks her if she has a nickname, she settles on Paks.

Korryn beats Paks badly after she refuses to sleep with him. He then claims that Paks attacked Stephi, even though she is so injured she can hardly walk and keeps vomiting. In addition to being discharged from the company, branded, and flogged, Korryn is shaved "like a shorn lamb". This act foreshadows something that happens to Paks in "Oath of Gold".

Paks is asexual: she has no sexual desire and also doesn't view anyone romantically. Her friend Saben wants to bed her, but respects her lack of feelings for him and doesn't press it. She briefly wonders what it would be like to sleep with him, but knows she wouldn't enjoy it.

In the confusion of battle, she forgets the right strokes and is struck hard in the leg. The Duke gives her a very expensive healing to cure her quickly--Paks estimates it might cost more than her company's entire contract. A mage heals her and gives her a potion, and she is ready to fight again in only a few days.

Paks haggles the man down from a higher price, but then finds out that Saben had actually haggled the guy down to an even lower price and still thought it was too much. Saben laughs over it and tells her he'll bargain for her in the future. He buys her a fern comb for her hair.

Shortly after this scene, Paks finds out that Saben and Canna died from wounds they got when fighting the brigands. Paks is given the horse icon she bought for Saben. As well, Canna asked that Paks take her Gird medallion, even though Paks is not a Girdsman and medallions normally go back to the grange.

The gold ring is made of three bands that intertwine into one, representing the three that started out--Paks, Saben, and Canna--and the one that succeeded in delivering the message. The gold represents Paks's loyalty. There's more to this ring than she realizes...

The paladin there is surprised that the blow from the priest's axe doesn't kill Paks, as Liart weapons should kill any person not protected by a god or saint. He's also shocked that although she wears a Gird medallion, she has no loyalty to the patron saint of fighters. He interprets this event as a sign that Paks is a person with some special destiny.

She goes on a volunteer mission to rescue Aliam Halveric's son, who was kidnapped by Siniava's forces. Paks doesn't help with the actual rescue--she's part of the getaway team in the boats.

Because Paks captures him and he's responsible for her friends' deaths, she can choose if he has a quick or painful death. She says their company is different than the Honeycat's in that they don't torture others. The Duke is angry with her but accepts her decision, and Aliam beheads Siniava.
