Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Vanity was the beginning and end of _______________'s character; vanity of person and of situation." Who is being described?

Answer: Sir Walter Elliot

A rather shallow gentleman. His only comments throughout the book involve how people look, how they rank, and how his family is received and looked upon.
2. Why does Anne go to Uppercross instead of Bath with her father and sister?

Answer: Because her sister, Mary, is ill

Mary is a very insecure hypochondriac who continually craves attention. Anne is good-natured enough to oblige her.
3. What does Captain Wentworth say about Anne after seeing her again?

Answer: She 'was so altered, he should not know you (her) again.'

His pride has been pricked and he can't admit to any attraction.
4. Why did Anne break her engagement to Cpt. Wentworth 8 years before?

Answer: Lady Russell talked her out of it because of his lack of fortune and prospects

Against her own instincts, she listened to Lady Russell. She thinks she would have been happier if she'd married him, but she doesn't blame Lady Russell or herself.
5. Mr Elliot courts Anne, because he does prefer her to Elizabeth, but mainly because....

Answer: He's anxious to prevent a marriage between Sir Walter and Mrs Clay

Mr Elliot wants to make sure of his succession to the title.
6. How does Anne learn of Mr Elliot's duplicity?

Answer: Mrs Smith has a history with Mr Elliot, and her nurse has heard gossip

She didn't really care anyway, since she was only concerned with Cpt. Wentworth. It does make it easier for her to turn down his proposal.
7. Who does the following quote refer to? "...Mrs Smith was not the only widow in Bath between thirty and forty, with little to live on, and no sirname (sic) of dignity."

Answer: Mrs Clay

Sir Walter and Elizabeth despise Anne's calling on Mrs Smith, but entertain Mrs Clay in their own house.
8. While in Lyme, who does the Uppercross group visit?

Answer: Captain and Mrs Harville

Because Cpt Wentworth wants to see his old Navy friend, the Uppercross group decide to join him.
9. Why does Cpt Wentworth overcome his jealousy and write to Anne of his love?

Answer: He overhears her discussing women's constancy with Cpt Harville

Cpt Harville believes that everything he has ever read and experienced proved that men are the only constant ones. Anne disagrees eloquently.
10. Who was the only one 'immediately gratified' by Anne's engagement?

Answer: Her sister Mary

Lady Russell gradually came around, because her primary interest was in Anne's happiness, but this took some time.
