Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a stanza?

Answer: a paragraph in a poem

If it is a rhyming poem, each stanza will usually have two words that rhyme. Sometimes there may be more.
2. 'Poor little pet dog. At home alone, all day long. Sleeping all day long.' This is an example of a what type of poem?

Answer: Haiku

This poem is called 'Little Dog'. The Haiku is made up of three short lines of five, seven, and five syllables respectively. It has a total of seventeen syllables. I wrote "Little Dog" myself, actually.
3. Which one of these is NOT an example of an onomatopoeia?

Answer: help

Onomatopoeia is the word that is given to the sound of something. Splash is the word that is given to the sound of something being dropped into water. When you say the word it sounds like what it is meant to be describing. 'Help' is what someone may say when they are in trouble. It does not sound like what it is meant to describe. Just like BANG is an onomatopoeia but gunshot is not.
4. What is personification?

Answer: when an animal or object is given human qualities

Personification is when an animal or inanimate object is given human qualities. "The Hare and the Tortoise" is a good example of a story with personification. The Hare and the Tortoise actually talk to each other, or to themselves so that we can understand.
5. What is a simile?

Answer: one object that is LIKE another

"On a hot day, the sun IS LIKE a hot oven". This is an example of a simile. Another example would be "I was as happy as a lark". When something is LIKE something else, but it isn't exactly that something, it is a simile.
6. 1 cup of trust 1 cup of secrets 1/2 a cup of honesty then mix in 1/2 a cup of encouragement and support, with a touch of laughter What is wrong with this poem?

Answer: there's nothing wrong with it

This is a recipe poem. The heading of this poem, which I actually wrote myself, is 'Recipe for Friendship', but poems do not necessarily need to have headings. Not all poems necessarily have to rhyme either, remember. My Haiku poem in Question 2 doesn't rhyme.
7. What is a metaphor?

Answer: a comparison that says one thing is the same as another

In the song 'We are Australian', the beginning line is 'We are one'. This is an example of a metaphor. We are NOT LIKE one, but 'we ARE one'.
8. True or false: A Free Verse poem does not have to rhyme.

Answer: True

As its name suggests, a Free Verse poem gives the writer the freedom to express his thoughts and feelings on paper, without having to worry about rhyme, rhythm, or form.
9. A poem in which the first letters of each line form a word is called a what?

Answer: acrostic

Jane.
Jumpy
Always fun
Never boring
Ecstatic
This is an example of an acrostic poem. Acrostic poems do not have to rhyme, and can be about anything.
10. Let's finish with an easy one. How many lines does a limerick consist of?

Answer: 5

The last line always rhymes with the first and second lines, and the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other. Lines 1, 2, and 5 may have from 8 to 11 syllables, and lines 3 and 4 may have from five to seven syllables. The last line line of the limerick is very important because it is the funny one, containing a surprise or punchline.

Many limericks start with "There once was...". Most of the time it is about a person or animal.
