Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Antigone was punished for doing what act?

Answer: burying her traitor brother

Antigone was sentenced to die because she gave her brother Polynices a funeral. He was supposed to be left unburied because he went against his city in the war. The king made a law that whoever buried Polynices was to be punished.
2. Jocasta's brother Creon became the king after the deaths of Polynices and Eteocles.

Answer: True

Polynices and Eteocles killed each other in battle because of an argument over whose turn it was to rule Thebes. Their mother Jocasta's brother Creon then became the temporary king until someone else could be found.
3. What was Antigone's main reason for burying her brother?

Answer: reverence for gods

There was actually more than one reason. Antigone also wanted to honor her family, and said that she would be dead longer than alive (so if she was punished and killed, it wouldn't matter).
4. Haemon, Creon's son, was engaged to Ismene, Antigone's sister.

Answer: False

Actually, Haemon was engaged to Antigone.
5. What happens to Antigone at the end of the play?

Answer: she hangs herself

In the end, after Creon punishes Antigone for burying Polynices, he realizes that he was wrong, and when he goes to free her, she is dead.
6. What happens to Creon after Antigone's death?

Answer: his wife and son die

After Antigone dies, Haemon kills himself because he was mad at his father for punishing Antigone. Then Creon's wife Eurydice (not the nymph from Greek myths) kills herself because her son died.
7. Who is Oedipus?

Answer: the father of Antigone

The whole family has a curse because of Oedipus.
8. Did Creon end up dying in the end with Antigone?

Answer: No

It seems like he's going to die eventually, but doesn't in the play.
9. In how many days does the play occur?

Answer: 1

Even though it seems like the play is many days, it takes place all in one day!
10. How many siblings does Antigone have?

Answer: 3

In about the year 442, "Antigone" was written.
