Brady Wayne Darby is a street-tough, poor white trash sort of kid living in a trailer park with his mother and younger brother, Petey. Brady does not get along with his mother and longs for the day he can leave her home. For now, he reluctantly attends school, works a menial job after school and winds up caring for Petey most of the time while his mother goes out partying most of the night. Brady fails to see his own potential and winds up making some very poor life choices.
2. Brady has a job after school and finds a way to supplement his earnings by skimming some money off the top of his employer's daily income. What does Brady do on his job?

Answer: cleans a laundromat

Brady works for Mr. Tatlock at the Touhy Trailer Park laundromat. He has been skimming the money from three washes and three dries at each of the ten machines in the laundromat. Brady figures Mr. Tatlock will never know and justifies it by the fact that he can use the money. Mr. Tatlock does find out and confronts Brady and demands that he repay $200 or he will call the police. Brady no longer has the money and on top of all his other worries, he must figure a way out of this predicament.

Brady tries out for the role of Conrad Birdie in the school's performance of "Bye-bye, Birdie", a role which has already been filled by the son of a wealthy family. Brady gives it his all, including borrowing his friend's guitar for authenticity, and lands the role contingent on his keeping his grades up.

His grades continue to fall and at the last moment Brady is replaced in the role. This further fuels the downward spiral of Brady's young life.
