Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did Inspector Wexford visit London?

Answer: To recover from a thrombosis

He was staying with his nephew, Superintendent Howard Fortune, while Dora and Denise Fortune kept him on a strict diet and enforced rest and exercise schedule. Sheila, in a refreshing change, doesn't appear in this novel.
2. What is the significance of the phrase "literary chit chat?"

Answer: That was how he and Howard passed their evenings

Howard had received a letter from Dr. Crocker asking him not to allow Wexford to do any police work or strain himself in any way. Howard was utterly frustrated by this since he needed Wexford's help. He was delighted to have his cover blown and discuss the case.
3. What did Loveday Morgan plan to do for the rest of her days?

Answer: Watch TV and cradle her baby

Having been raised in the Temple of the Revelation, an isolationist cult, she had never seen television before and was enthralled with it. She naively believed she could use the adoption money she got to support her and the baby.
4. The book was full of people wanting to have or adopt children. Who, besides Stephen Dearborn was going through a tortuous adoption?

Answer: Sergeant Clements

He and his wife agonized over whether they would be allowed to finally keep the son they had been fostering for three months. Louise Sampson was Melanie Dearborn's grown-up daughter and Verity Bate was a classmate of hers.
5. What was unusual about Stephen Dearborn taking his daughter, Alexandra, around Kenbourne Vale to show her the architecture?

Answer: She was less than a year old

And Dearborn was obsessed with her, buying her baby finery and furs, and running to her crib whenever she cried.
6. What, other than her obvious naiveté, did Ivan Teal find striking about Loveday Morgan?

Answer: She had absolutely no accent

Cindy Crawford has a million dollar walk and if Loveday Morgan had ever been put in a car, she wouldn't have known which end the driver's seat was at.
7. What was Wexford's strongest impression of Peggy Pope?

Answer: She looked like a forties film star

And she was unbelievably dirty, too, with greasy hair. That's why her "forties film star" features were so striking.
8. What unusual quirk did Denise Fortune have?

Answer: She loved bizarre flower arrangements

They were always trailing blossoms and branches. Wexford was never sure if they had fallen over and he should fix them or whether the effect was intentional. Other than that, she was a perfectly nice woman.
9. Why was Michael Baker so sarcastic and disparaging towards Wexford?

Answer: His wife had left him

And it wasn't just Wexford he was nasty to. Baker's young wife had gotten pregnant by and run off with another man. Wexford was very annoyed that Baker shared the same first name as his own trusted partner back in Kingsmarkham, Mike Burden. Baker did eventually apologize and accept Wexford's work.
10. Why did Stephen Dearborn fall in love with his wife?

Answer: She was making bread when he first saw her

As he told Wexford, "I could watch Miss World doing a striptease and it would leave me cold, but let me see a woman in a clean white apron rolling pastry and I'd be in love with her before she could close the kitchen door." His wife replied, "That's true .... you were."
11. Where did Wexford get the clue that sent him to Loveday's family?

Answer: At the blind woman's house

To find the letter that had the name and address, he had to search through all the ribbon-tied bundles of her saved letters in every room of her house.
12. True or false: Melanie Dearborn had a difficult pregnancy with Alexandra.

Answer: False

Alexandra was adopted. Oddly enough, they kept the name the birth mother had given the little girl.
13. Whose scarf was Loveday strangled with?

Answer: Melanie Dearborn's

Her husband, Stephen Dearborn, had impulsively given it, along with a lot of clothing, to his housecleaner when she left. Loveday received the scarf from the housecleaner, who was her aunt.
14. Who was the father of Loveday Morgan's baby?

Answer: Alexander Morgan

He was the Shepherd (leader) of the Temple of the Revelation. He went through a sham marriage ceremony with five of his young parishioners, promising them a special kind of salvation if they had sex with him. When he started in on the older members of the congregation, the police were called and Morgan went to prison for it. Raoul Loveday was one of Aleister Crowley's associates who died mysteriously in 1923 after one of Crowley's rites.
15. What was the book that everyone kept giving Wexford copies of throughout the book?

Answer: Utopia

The first copy he tried to read, out of Howard's library, was in Latin, which he couldn't read. Everyone else kept buying him English tranlations. "Religio Medici" was the book Lord Peter Wimsey had in his pocket when he went out on the river with Harriet Vane in "Gaudy Night."
