Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The novel "Santiago" by Mike Resnick has a subtitle. What is it?

Answer: A Myth of the Far Future

The book was first published in 1986, and was followed by its direct sequel "The Return of Santiago" in 2003.
Between 1989 and 2015, Mike Resnick was nominated for thirty-seven Hugo Awards, winning five of them.
2. The opening lines of the book are an imaginative description of the title character. According to them, what does he "wrestle with just to work up an appetite"?

Answer: Black Holes

The whole description reads "They say his father was a comet and his mother a stellar wind, that he juggles planets as if they were feathers and wrestles with black holes just to work up an appetite. They say he never sleeps and that his eyes burn brighter than a nova, and that his shout can level mountains.
They call him Santiago."
The price on Santiago's head is the largest one ever set by the Galactic authorities. The odd thing is that nobody ever seems quite certain just exactly what he has done; everything is rumour, conjecture, and hearsay, and as the stories are passed along the "grapevine" from planet to planet, the crimes and exploits get bigger and more daring with each retelling.
3. Each section of the novel opens with a stanza of a poem, purportedly written by which minstrel character?

Answer: Black Orpheus

According to the story, nobody knows what Black Orpheus' real name is, just that "it wasn't Orpheus, although he was black". The rumour has it that he followed a woman out to the stars and "had nothing but his music to give her".

Just in case you were wondering :D Blind "Noisy" Rhysling appears in several books and short stories by Robert A. Heinlein.
Allan a Dale was the wandering minstrel from Robin Hood's band of Merry Men according to legend, and Jez Cunningham is a member of the British folk rock band The Levellers.
4. Most of the people searching for Santiago are Bounty Hunters or thieves, but what is the profession of Virtue MacKenzie?

Answer: Journalist

Virtue is a reporter and journalist who knows that an exclusive interview with the elusive Santiago could make her fortune, career wise, across the whole of inhabited space.
5. Who is the thief who has dedicated his life to tracking down Santiago's secret home in order to steal from his fabled art collection?

Answer: Jolly Swagman

The Jolly Swagman desperately wants to get his hands on some unique pieces of alien art that are rumoured to be in the possession of Santiago.
As with everything else about him, nobody knows anything for sure; all the various hunters have to go on are whispers and half-hints and fragments of legend.
6. Each of the six sections of the novel is named for one of the main characters from the story. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Celeste

The other three sections are named for "Angel", "Jolly Swagman" and "Santiago" himself.
"Songbird" is Sebastian Nightingale Cain, and the "Virgin Queen" is Virtue MacKenzie.
7. What is the one consistent distinguishing feature of Santiago's appearance? It is always the same no matter what other details change.

Answer: An 'S' shaped scar on the back of his hand

I decided to try and write this quiz without spoilers, so if you want to know just why and how the scar is the one constant thing about the appearance of Santiago, you will have to read the book!
8. Which of these is NOT a Bounty Hunter mentioned in Mike Resnick's novel "Santiago"?

Answer: Zachary Santos Fuentes

The book is set in the far future, with a distinctly Wild West theme at the galactic frontier. Bounty Hunters abound and are often almost the only "law" there is out among the stars.
Giles sans Pitie is famous across inhabited space for his steel prosthetic hand. Angel teams up with Virtue, in betrayal of Sebastian Cain, another Bounty Hunter, but is later killed by Giles sans Pitie.
9. On which planet is the "grass covered knoll" with "seventeen white crosses" marking the graves of would-be colonists, each one bearing the legend "Killed by Santiago"?

Answer: Silverblue

The murder of seventeen innocent settlers is one of the most (in)famous of the legendary exploits of Santiago.
As the story progresses though, it becomes apparent that all is not as it seems - rumour and misdirection abound, as with all the tales people tell about the mysterious Santiago.
10. In the novel, when Sebastian Nightingale Cain kills Altair of Altair, how does he see through her illusions?

Answer: There are no brooks on Sylaria

Altair of Altair is one of the most feared assassins in the galaxy, and Sebastian confronts her in her own lair in a bit to extract information that will help him in his search for Santiago.
She creates an almost perfect illusion to disarm him and let her kill him, but he realises something is wrong when he remembers "there are no brooks on Sylaria" and knows what he is experiencing cannot possibly be real.
