Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who shrieked the following line? "Speak hands for me!"

Answer: Casca

After the conspirators had finished egging Caesar on, asking him for something they knew he would not grant, Casca, who had helped get Caesar to the capital so he could be assassinated, used his hands and his sword to speak for him, becoming the first to stab Caesar.
2. Who spouted the following lines? "That I was constant Cimber should be banished, And constant do remain to keep him so."

Answer: Caesar

Knowing of Caesar's vanity and his professed godhood, the conspirators, Brutus included, begged Caesar to recall Metellus Cimber out of banishment, knowing that Caesar would not grant the request. Even Brutus, much beloved by Caesar, knelt "bootless"(in vain) while the others moved in for the kill.
3. Who muttered the following words? "Et tu, Brute,..."

Answer: Caesar

Nobody killed in the entire play died without leaving a last word...except Brutus' wife Portia, who "swallowed fire," so probably could not speak. After Caesar was stabbed some twenty times, he had enough energy to chastise Brutus,
"Et tu, Brute? Then fall Caesar." Later Antony would tell the people that it was not swords that killed Caesar, but the ingratitude shown by Brutus that ended it all.
4. Who moaned the following lines? "O, mighty Caesar! Dost thou lie so low? Are all thy conquests, glories, triumphs, spoils Shrunk to this little measure? Fare thee well."

Answer: Antony

After Caesar's asassination, Antony begs the conspirators for an opportunity to speak with them and find out why they had murdered Caesar. Upon being granted amnesty, Antony entering the Forum where Caesar, ironically, lay dead at the foot of Pompey's statue. Before speaking to Brutus, Antony addresses Caesar's corpse.
5. Who whispered these words? "Brutus, do not consent That Antony speak in Caesar's funeral."

Answer: Cassius

Brutus may have been a great man, but he was not a good tactician. He saw only what was right in front of him. He saw Antony weeping over Caesar's bloody corpse, begging only that he be allowed to eulogize Caesar in the marketplace. Upon Brutus's granting permission, Cassius urged that Antony be disallowed as a speaker in the funeral. Brutus told Cassius to chill, because Brutus would speak first. Big mistake allowing Antony to speak.
6. Who spit out these lines? "O pardon me, thou bleeding piece of earth, That I am meek and gentle with these butchers."

Answer: Antony

After Brutus has given Antony his conditions upon which Antony will be allowed to speak in Caesar's funeral, Brutus goes into the pulpit to address the confused mob. Antony remains for a couple moments to swear vengeance upon the heads of Brutus and Cassius.

He swears that from this moment war will become so commonplace that mothers "will but smile when they see their babes... quartered by the hands of war."
7. Who spoke these lines? "With this I depart. As I slew Caesar for the good of Rome, I have the same dagger for myself, when it shall Please my country to need my death."

Answer: Brutus

Brutus explains to the people that he had reasons for killing Caesar. He says he killed "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more." By the time he has finished his oration, the mob is ready to build Brutus "a statue to his ancestors," to "carry him in triumph to his house," even to make Brutus king. Brutus tells them to stay and listen to Antony, but he reminds them that he loves them, and since he loves them, he has kill Caesar, who would have made them all slaves.
8. Who murmurred these lines? "How ill this taper burns. Ha! Who comes here? I think it is the weakness of mine eyes That shapes this monstrous apparition."

Answer: Brutus

After fleeing for their lives because Antony told the people about Caesar's will, making them all his heirs, Brutus is camped on the Plains of Sardis, awaiting the armies of Antony and Octavius. Just before sleep, Brutus sees an apparition. "What art thou," Brutus asks. "Thy evil spirit, Brutus," the ghost answers.

The ghost proceeds to tell Brutus that the two of them will meet again, at Phillipi, which will become Brutus's Waterloo.
9. Who stammered these lines? "Caesar, thou art avenged, Even with the sword that killed thee."

Answer: Cassius

Today is Cassius's birthday. They had a chance to win that day's battle, but there was a comedy of errors that ensued. Bottom line: Brutus gave the order too early and let Antony escape and regroup. Nearsighted Cassius, seeing men riding away, thought they were the enemy and ended up attacking his own people. Finally, cut off and alone, Cassius convinces one of his men to hold his (Cassius's) sword while Cassius runs upon it, commiting suicide, saving just enough breath to tell Caesar, "Ave atque valle" (Hello and goodbye).
10. Who uttered these lines? "Caesar, now be still, I killed not thee with half so good a will."

Answer: Brutus

Brutus has said all along that if he lost the battle, he would not go back to Rome either as a slave or a member of someone else's army. He finds Cassius's body and blames Caesar. "Caesar, thou art mighty yet," he says before asking all of his friends to help him commit suicide. Most of them refuse, saying, "That's not a job for a friend." Finaly Strato agrees.

He holds Brutus's sword, shakes Brutus's hand, and they embrace, pulling Brutus onto the sword, where he finally says good-bye to Caesar.
