Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Thud is also the name of a game. In which Discworld novel was it first mentioned?

Answer: Going Postal

Lord Vetinari is referred to as playing this game in 'Going Postal'. In the game, trolls and dwarfs have to play against each other. In order to win the game, the player must win twice - once as a dwarf and next as a troll. This is to gauge the player's ability to think both ways.
2. Which of the following was NOT a reason offered by Sam Vimes to show that vampires weren't suited to join the City Watch?

Answer: They can't work in the daytime.

The real reason was that Sam Vimes just didn't like vampires but he couldn't say this in front of the Patrician, Lord Vetinari. Instead he told Doreen that vampires were too intelligent to want to be mere policemen.
3. Who was the first vampire to join the City Watch?

Answer: Salacia von Humpeding

The Patrician wanted the City Watch to be represented by all the different types of species. Also, the Ankh-Morpork Mission of the Uberwald League of Temperance was pressurizing him to include a vampire in the Watch. In the end Sam Vimes had to give in to their demands and agree to interview their candidate.
4. The symbol on each dwarf entrance is a circle with a horizontal line passing through it. Which of the following also uses the same symbol?

Answer: The London Underground

The sign of the Summoning Dark is a large eyeball with a tail while that of the Following Dark is a circle with two diagonal lines.
5. Who was the government inspector in charge of checking the City Watch's accounts?

Answer: A. E. Pessimal

He ended up saving Sam Vimes' life and joining the Watch as a lance-constable.
6. To whom did the club found next to the body of Grag Hamcrusher belong?

Answer: Helmclever

The club was placed next to the body to throw suspicion on a troll. Mr. Shine had given that club to Helmclever for being so good at the game of Thud.
7. Terry Pratchett frequently spoofs various current events in his novels. Which controversial bestseller is parodied in 'Thud!'?

Answer: The Da Vinci Code

'The Battle of Koom Valley' painting by Methodia Rascal is said to hold the key to the mystery surrounding Koom Valley. A book titled 'The Koom Valley Codex' contained his notes and led people to believe that the secret location of a treasure was hidden in the painting.
This is similar to 'The Da Vinci Code' plot which centers on the secret of Mary Magdalene hidden in one of Leonardo DaVinci's paintings.
8. Which of the following Discworld characters makes an appearance in the book?

Answer: Ridcully

Sam Vimes and his force have to reach Koom Valley before the dwarfs get there. Even though Sam dislikes the use of magic, he is forced to approach Arch Chancellor Ridcully of the Unseen University for help.
9. Which member of the City Watch was a secret agent of the Low King?

Answer: Sally

Sally had joined the City Watch to keep an eye on the deep dwarfs who had suddenly arrived at Ankh-Morpork.
10. What was the password used to make the Device speak?

Answer: Awk

Methodia Rascal thought he was a chicken and this gave Sam Vimes an idea of what the password might be. The Device cleared all the misunderstandings between the dwarfs and trolls and this would probably lead to peace in the future ending the centuries old conflict.
