Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Captain Mackenzie Calhoun is the main protagonist of the "New Frontier" series but this was not his original name. What is his true native Xenexian name?

Answer: M'k'n'zy

M'k'n'zy of Calhoun, as he was known as a child and young man, was a teenage warlord on his native Xenex forced to fight for the freedom of his people from their Danteri enemies. The name change to Mackenzie occurred when M'k'n'zy was persuaded by Captain Jean Luc Picard to join and attend Starfleet Academy, upon his arrival there the cadet realised that his name was too difficult for many of his classmates to pronounce and so 'Mackenzie' was born.
2. When Elizabeth Shelby was first seen in the "New Frontier" series she had been assigned to serve as First Officer to Captain Calhoun on the USS Excalibur. However, as the series progressed she was offered and accepted the captaincy of three vessels before finally being promoted to admiral. Which of the ships listed did Shelby not get offered the captaincy for?

Answer: USS Victory

After serving as captain of the USS Exeter for a short time Shelby decided to transfer to be the captain of the newly built Galaxy-class USS Excalibur (the previous Ambassador-class incarnation having been destroyed six months earlier, along with Captain Calhoun). Upon the discovery that Calhoun was still alive, Shelby instead became captain of the USS Trident and was assigned to patrol the same sector of space as Calhoun's Excalibur, Sector 221-G.

Shelby would later be promoted to Admiral and become the commander of Space Station Bravo.
3. Burgoyne 172 was notorious, among both the rest of the Hermat species and hir crewmates on the USS Excalibur, for hir hedonistic and sociable personality. Therefore, it was interesting to see how s/he changed upon becoming a father, but who was the mother of hir first born son, Xy?

Answer: Selar

Burgoyne made romantic overtures toward the Chief Medical Officer, Selar, from the moment they first met although Selar made it clear she was not interested. It was not until Selar was suffering from the effects of pon farr that the two eventually got together, although their relationship was stormy and not even the birth and subsequent parenting of Xyon could keep them together in the end.
4. The half-Vulcan, half-Romulan, Soleta was a valued member of the Excalibur crew and Starfleet. However, at that time it was known to only a couple of people that Soleta, who passed for full-blooded Vulcan, had a Romulan father. What happened when it was discovered by the rest of Starfleet that she had familial ties to Romulus?

Answer: She resigned from Starfleet to avoid demotion

After handing in her resignation Soleta returned to Romulus and eventually ended up being given command of a Romulan stealth ship, the IRW Spectre.
5. Zak Kebron, the Brikar Chief of Security onboard the USS Excalibur, underwent something of a 'change' several books into the "New Frontier" series. What was the nature of this change?

Answer: Stoic and surly teenager to talkative and sensitive adult

Kebron's 'change' was heralded by the sloughing off of great portions of his skin until eventually a new skin was revealed underneath. He explained it as the process of shedding off the last vestiges of adolescence and becoming an adult. As a consequence of this change Zak lost most of his trademark sarcasm and became a much more sensitive and verbose individual. Eventually he ended up serving in a double capacity; both at his old post as Security Chief and his new post as Ship's Counselor.
6. For a long time Mark McHenry gave the impression that he was just a normal human officer, although perhaps a little eccentric. This all changed when it later came to light that Mark was the reason everybody survived, against the odds, when the USS Excalibur unexpectedly blew up. What action did he take that saved the crew's lives?

Answer: Slowed down time so everybody could make it to the escape pods

McHenry's supernatural act was not known about in the immediate aftermath of the explosion and the crew presumed they had just been lucky. It was only later, when Zak Kebron observed that Q had no power over Mark, that suspicions started to grow about what special abilities he might be hiding.

It was later revealed that McHenry was descended from the god Apollo whom Captain James T. Kirk had encountered during the USS Enterprise's travels over a century earlier.
7. Robin Lefler was originally the Operations Officer on the USS Excalibur. In 2374 the ship discovered one of Robin's relatives, that she had previously assumed to be deceased, still alive and imprisoned on the planet Ahmista. Which relation to Robin was this person?

Answer: Her mother, Morgan Lefler

Robin was shocked to discover that her mother had faked her own death because she had been born immortal and didn't want to have to watch her family die while she continued to live on forever.
8. Selar, the Vulcan Chief Medical Officer of the USS Excalibur, originally served on the USS Enterprise D under Dr. Beverley Crusher. True or false?

Answer: True

Selar took leave from her job aboard the USS Enterprise in order to undergo the Vulcan biological imperative pon farr. This ritual was to lead to the untimely death of her husband Voltak and would have a profound effect on the rest of her life.
9. Si Cwan, one of only two surviving members of the Thallonian Royal Family along with his sister Kalinda, was not a member of the USS Excalibur's crew at the beginning of the "New Frontier" series. How then did he come to be onboard the ship?

Answer: Soleta smuggled him aboard

Back when the monarchy of the Thallonian Empire still stood Prince Si Cwan had allowed Soleta to escape her imprisonment by his people. She had been detained for trespassing in Thallonian space. After the fall of the Thallonian Empire when Si Cwan wanted to go along on the Excalibur's mission to Sector 221-G, the area which the Thallonian Empire had once governed, Soleta's outstanding debt to him and her position as Chief Science Officer came in useful when Starfleet refused to allow him access to the mission.
10. Over the many books of the "New Frontier" series a number of children have been born to the crew. Which one of the sons listed is not related to his father biologically?

Answer: Moke

Captain Calhoun encountered Moke when he was trapped on a planet containing a pre-warp civilisation after he escaped the explosion that destroyed the USS Excalibur. Later, when Moke's mother was killed, Calhoun took the boy under his own care as his adopted son.

Xyon is Calhoun's older son conceived when he was still living on Xenex, Xy is the son of Burgoyne 172 and Selar, named in memory of Xyon who it was thought was dead at the time of Xy's birth and Cwansi is the son of Si Cwan and Robin Lefler.
