He won a New Jersey rifle match that was hosted by Major General Commandant Holcomb, whom Joe didn't recognize because the General was in civilian clothing.

He got a bad case of publicity lust, and pushed the lead man in the stick out of the way, so that he could jump out first. He then got tangled in the rip cord, and hit the horizontal stabilizer of the plane. He was dead before he hit the ground.

He was to give first hand reports of "how things are really going over there". Knox hired Pickering because he was not a "yes man", and would tell him the unvarnished truth, as opposed to the washed down stories Knox was getting from the Admirals. Thus he was thought of as "Knox's Spy".
