Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's flip to this 1910 classic from Frances Hodgson Burnett, which starts, 'When Mary Lennox was sent to Misselthwaite Manor to live with her uncle, everybody said she was the most disagreeable-looking child ever seen.' What's this book?

Answer: The Secret Garden

After Mary's parents are killed she is sent to live with her uncle. Her uncle is a very unpleasant bitter person, and life in the rambling house is miserable. Mary learns of a secret garden that has been locked up by her uncle since the death of his wife. Shortly after that Mary discovers Colin, the son of her uncle, therefore her cousin. Together they regain health, restore the garden to its former beauty and, of course, everyone lives happily ever after.
2. 'The first place that I can well remember was a large pleasant meadow with a pond of clear water in it.' Which of these animal titles starts with this line?

Answer: Black Beauty

'Black Beauty' was written to highlight the awful treatment of horses in the 19th Century. Interestingly, the book is written with Black Beauty being the narrator discussing his life as a colt and a horse, being looked after kindly and cruelly, remembering his horse friends and his human owners.
3. '"Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents" grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.' Which literary classic by Louisa May Alcott is this from?

Answer: Little Women

Set in the American Civil War, 'Little Women' was about four sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. Their father was a minister to the troops, and while he was away the family struggled with day to day living.
4. 'The house in the hollow was "a mile from anywhere" - so Maywood people said.' From author L.M. Montgomery, which of these titles contains this first line?

Answer: Emily of New Moon

L.M. Montgomery is probably better known for the "Anne of Green Gables" books, but my favourite is the "Emily" series. Emily is orphaned and sent to live with her two aunts, one friendly and nice, the other stiff and severe. The books follow Emily's trials and tribulations, her relationships with her family and friends, and, of course, her relationships with her cats.
5. '"Tom!" No answer. "TOM!" No answer. "What's gone with that boy, I wonder? You TOM!"' That's a lot of shouting, but which venerable classic is this from?

Answer: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The story, set in a town on the Mississippi River, revolves around the life of Tom Sawyer. Tom is a naughty young man who lives with his aunt - he skips school, plays tricks on people and gets up to general mischief. He is clever and is able manipulate his friends. The book is a collection of amusing stories of Tom getting into all sorts of trouble.
6. 'My father had a small estate in Nottinghamshire; I was the third of five sons.' This line introduces us to the well-traveled narrator of which classic?

Answer: Gulliver's Travels

'Gulliver's Travels' is a set of four travels to different lands. The first is Lilliput, where Gulliver is captured by little people. The second journey is to Brobdingnag, a land of giants. The third is to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib and Japan.

The fourth is to the Land of the Houyhnhnms, a race of talking horses. These tales were a form of satire of the 'traveler's tale' subgenre, which author Jonathan Swift wrote to 'vex the world'.
7. 'Marley was dead, to begin with.' May you guess where this line comes from? Bah, humbug!

Answer: A Christmas Carol

'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens is about a business man, Ebenezer Scrooge, who is not a nice man and has no Christmas spirit. Then Scrooge is visited by the ghost Jacob Marley (his former business partner), the ghost of Christmas Past, the ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. After the visits of the ghosts and being shamed for his deeds, Scrooge becomes transformed.
8. 'The breeze blew their silver manes out behind them like the glittering crests of waves, lifting the silver forelocks from their eyes.' This comes from the 'Silver Brumby' series, but which book did this line come from?

Answer: Silver Brumby's Daughter

Elyne Mitchell wrote the 'Silver Brumby' books. The books are written about the wild horses of Australia, the brumbies, and how they survive in the wild and their interaction with other herds and man. 'The Silver Brumby's Daughter' is written about Throwa's daughter, her relationship to the herd, her capture by men and her freedom.
9. 'I will begin the story of my adventures with a certain morning early in the month of June, the year of grace 1751, when I took the key for the last time out of the door of my father's house.' What boy's novel did this originate?

Answer: Kidnapped

'Kidnapped' was written by Robert Louis Stevenson. Set in the 18th Century after the Jacobite Rising, it follows 17 year old David Balfour. It includes many of the political and social issues that were prevalent in Scotland, such as the Appin Murder.
10. 'The tempest had lasted six days, and, far from abating, now redoubled in fury.' Don't be abandoned at a deserted island to find this line. Which literary classic is this from?

Answer: The Swiss Family Robinson

This classic was written by Johan David Wyss, and follows a Swiss family's time after being shipwrecked in the East Indies. In the book, we follow patriarch William, wife Elizabeth and their four children Fritz, Ernest, Jack and Francis, as they make a living on a tropical island with their surviving provisions and the resources of the island, with a somewhat Christian-oriented moral in many chapters.
