Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This book is based on a fairy tale by which writer or writers?

Answer: Brothers Grimm

In 1999, Shannon and a friend challenged each other to write a book. She was geared up to write but didn't know where to begin. Taking inspiration from Robin McKinley and her first book "Beauty", Shannon decide to write a novel from her favorite fairy tale, "The Goose Girl".
2. What happened to Falada?

Answer: All of the answers are correct

Touch made the spot pound with her pulse as though Falada hit her again and again.
Falada had turned mad.

"Sir," she said, "the white horse, the royal one, has he been killed?"
He looked up from his ax.
"Aye." He stepped forward.

That day, she stopped. Her eyes were drawn to the curve of wall above the arch. There, fastened to the stones, his neck attatched to a round, polished board of dark wood, was the head of Falada.
3. Who has the gift of people-speaking?

Answer: Selia and Ani's mother

Ani was not used to being addressed by other children, and besides, this strange little girl had always made her feel uneasy - at once willing to do whatever Selia asked and eager to escape her notice. The same way, in fact, that she felt around her mother. The aunt raised one eyebrow in the blue shadow of her hat and watched the pair stroll away.
"That one has the gift of people-speaking," she said. "It can be powerful. Mark me and watch her."
4. What is Ani's full name?

Answer: Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee

She was born Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee, Crown Princess of Kildenree, and she did not open her eyes for three days.
5. Which is the first story Ani tells to the workers of Bayern?

Answer: The story of the gold-eating horses that run and sing

"There's a flash, and when she blinks, the horse is gone and a white-maned wind whinnies and prances and pushes around her. And the maiden mounts that wind and is borne away, up into the higher pastures, up and never seen again."
The hall was quiet. The hearth fire snapped at the silence, and the flames lowered themselves inside the glowing embers. Ani waited.
6. Who is Ani's best friend?

Answer: Enna

"I know," she said. "I won't tell anyone. You'll see that I won't. And Isi...can I still call you Isi? It fits you. I want to tell you how I believe you. I don't know why. I wouldn't believe Razo if he pricked his finger and he told me he was bleeding, and your story's almost as crazy as your bedtime tales, but I really do believe you. And when you get tired of worrying, and mourning your horse and trying not to be afraid, tell me and I'll do it for you a while so you can shut your eyes and sleep peaceful."
7. Who is Geric?

Answer: All of the answers are correct

He looked down and swallowed. "May I beg your pardon? I've behaved so badly to you,and I've been aching to explain."
"Is this about the 'I can't love you as a man loves a woman' bit?"
Geric grimaced. "Ah-ha, yes, that's the very line. I, you see, I noticed that last day in the goose pasture that I'd begun to - feel - something about you that I shouldn't, as I bethrothed and all, and I thought it best if I just stopped seeing you altogether. I was feeling rather terrible for betraying your sentiments, besides having lied to you about who I was. But then I saw you yesterday, well, maybe you can imagine that I haven't had a steady heartbeat since you walked into the throne room."
8. What does Enna feel an affinity with?

Answer: Fire

"Oh, the fire," said Enna. Its orange fingers waved spectres on the blacks of Enna's eyes. "I get to looking and can't look away. Don't you ever feel like fire is a friendly thing? That it's signaling to you with its flames, offering something?
Ani watched not the fire but the play of its light on Enna's face and felt comfort that there were others who listened for language in what was supposed to be mute and who sought out meaning in what was only beautiful.
9. Who does Selia love?

Answer: Ungolad

"Selia, love," said Ungolad. It was the first time Ani had detected fear in his voice. "I can't cut you, I can't cut your skin."
"I'll do it," said Terne.
"Shut it, you piece of meat," said Ungolad. "You think I'd let you touch her?"
Selia pressed herself close to Ungolad, her lips at his ear. His hands began to shake. Ani could hear Selia whisper, "I'm not afraid. Be brave, my love, and our labours will be over." She kissed his neck.
10. What is the punishment for treason in Kildenree?

Answer: Banishment

"What's the punishment for treason in Kildenree?"
Banishment, thought Ani, but Selia will not say that, and she noted that Selia's eyes sparkled while she thought.
"My lord," said Selia, "it is a grave crime and thus a public castigation. To be placed in a barrel full of nails and dragged through the streets by four white horses, I believe."
