Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Epona has many options open to her. Which of these does she want, and which of these is she being forced into?

Answer: She wants to be a Wife, but is forced to be a Gutuiter

Epona has loved the Smith, Goibban since her early childhood. She wants to marry him and break Kelti custom, which says she cannot marry into her own tribe. However, her talents recommend her to the priesthood, to become a Gutuiter, something she does not want.

She wants to live a life of her own choosing, and she also does not want to be anywhere near the current chief priest, Kernunnos.
2. This woman is sacrificed in the beginning of the book.

Answer: Brydda

Brydda is Epona's brother's wife, and lives in the lodge of the chief with Epona's family. Among the Kelti, the lodgefire is to be watched constantly by a wife within the lodge. One day, Brydda leaves the fire to watch her husband play a sport, and forgets about the fire.

The fire dies, and the Kelti believe the fire spirit will seek vengeance. They send Brydda back to the other worlds to apologize by burning her in a wicker cage.
3. Epona is stolen from her village by Kazhak and his men.

Answer: False

Epona asks Kazhak and his men to take her with them when they go home. She wishes to escape going into the priesthood, and cannot find any other way of getting away. Goibban has refused to marry her, and her mother willingly traded her for a funeral ritual in exchange for her training.
4. Name the Scythian men who come to the Kelti village.

Answer: Kazhak, Dasadas, Aksinya, Basl

Kazhak, the leader, Dasadas, the man who worships Epona after she saves the mare, Basl, who is killed in Carpatos, and Aksinya, who is Kazhak's good friend, all go to the Kelti village. Donya is one of the men who was lost on the journey to the village, before they met the Kelts. Tsaygas is the chief shaman of the Scythians. Kolaxais is the Han, or chief, of the Scythians, and Potor is Kazhak's friend who did not join in on the expedition.
5. The mare which Epona saved was dying from...?

Answer: Poison Weed

The mare Epona saved was pulling a Thracian cart which had been traded to Kazhak. Epona knew intuitively that the mare was sick, and saved it through her power. The horse was known amongst its owners to be a greedy mare, one who ate weeds along the roadside every chance she got.
6. Why did Epona want to go more slowly through the Sea of Grass?

Answer: To get a better look at the grass

Epona, who had been born and raised in a mountain range, had never seen such an extensive prairie as the Sea of Grass. She wanted to hear the birdsong, but was able to hear it just fine from a normal pace on the horse.
7. The first Scythian tribe Epona and her companions encountered was one belonging to Donya.

Answer: False

The first tribe of Scythians they met were a lesser tribe, led by Kazhak's good friend, Potor. After they left that camp, they went on to Kazhak's home tribe, where the Han, Prince of Horses, lived.
8. Who is the leader of Kazhak's tribe?

Answer: Kolaxais

Kazhak is the son of the Han, who is the chief of the Scythians. When Kolaxais, Prince of Horses, dies, it was believed that Kazhak would take his place.
9. Epona, to impress the Shamans of the Scythians, did which of the following?

Answer: Called a storm

Kazhak, who desperately needed Epona to prove she was worth the long journey to the Kelti, asked her to impress the Shamans in some way. He suggested that she heal Kolaxais and take away the Shamans' influence. She knew she could not do that from a distance. Instead, she called an unseasonable thunderstorm, and earned both respect and hatred from the Shamans.
10. After returning to the Blue Mountains, which of the following does NOT happen?

Answer: Epona is sacrificed for refusing to join the priesthood

When Epona returns with Dasadas, hoping Kazhak has escaped from the Shamans, the Kelti village has changed from when Epona first knew it. Kernunnos, perpetually in the dreamworld to contact Epona, wakes up, believes the Scythians are attacking the Kelti, and kills an already weakened Dasadas. Epona orders the horse she rides to tear Kernunnos to pieces.

The stallion does, and having killed her predecessor, she is named chief priest.
