Stephenie Meyer remembers this day very well because it was also the day that her kids began their swimming lesson. Before this day, she had only written pieces of other books more than six years previously.

Meyer's dream featured an average girl and a beautiful vampire standing in a meadow discussing how the vampire wanted the girl's blood so badly, yet they were falling in love with each other. This is the basis of "Confessions", Chapter 13 of the book.

After forming her dream into a chapter of the book, Meyer thought it was a better idea to continue her vision through the end before writing her introductions. It was late August 2003 when she connected the two pieces.

Meyer used characters from Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre" and Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" to name Edward. She believed the name to be romantic, but no longer as popular as it had once been.

Meyer loved her main character like a daughter and no name that she decided on was good enough. She finally decided on the name that she previously considered if she were to have a daughter, having only been blessed with sons.

Meyer went to old census records to find names that were popular when the characters were born. That is why the names of the vampires (Emmett, Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie, etc.) are more old-fashioned than the names of most of the other characters (Mike, Jessica, Tyler, Angela, etc.).

Meyer changed the names to Rosalie and Jasper, but still referred to them as Carol and Ronald at times by accident while writing the manuscripts for the rest of the series.

After searching Google for places with the most rainfall, Meyer figured out that the Washington peninsula barely had any sunlight and was the perfect place for vampires. Then, after looking at a map, she decided on Forks because it was a secluded area surrounded by trees.

While researching Forks, she discovered La Push and the Quiluete tribe, in which she became intrigued enough to use some of their fictional members in the books.

Meyer started sending chapters of the book to her older sister for feedback in late June. Emily was the only one who knew that she was writing the novel and suggested that she publish the book after reading the whole thing. Meyer, having finally finished a book, took her sister's advice.

Meyer was a little discouraged by the process that it took to get a book published but the love she had for her characters was enough to motivate her. She subscribed to WritersMarket.com and found several publishers that she could send her manuscript to.
