Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the story, Poe makes a lengthy comparison between the art of playing chess and playing cards. Which is closest to his observations?

Answer: Chess is a mechanical game which relies mostly on concentration and memory. Card games involve a lot of intangibles and rely on deductive reasoning.

Poe points out that card players can gain a distinct advantage over their opponents by observing their mannerisms, temperaments and tendencies in different situations. He states that chess is a "frivolous" game and that the intellect of chess players is overrated.
2. "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is considered to be one of the first of which genre of story?

Answer: Detective story

Although there have been some mysteries and stories in which crimes had been solved, Poe is largely credited for inventing the modern detective story.
3. Two women, Madam L'Espanaye and her daughter, Camille, were murdered on the fourth floor of a house in the Rue Morgue. What evidence suggested that the murderer(s) possessed great strength?

Answer: A woman's corpse was shoved feet-first up into a chimney.

The body of Camille L'Espanaye was stuffed so firmly into the narrow chimney that it took several men to pull her down!
4. Why was robbery not considered a likely motive for the murders?

Answer: Jewelry and money were left lying on the floor.

Several pieces of jewelry and almost four thousand francs in gold were found scattered about the residence.
5. How did the killer(s) evidently gain access to the house?

Answer: Through the fourth story window.

The killer(s) would have had to climb a trellis, swing on a lightning rod, grab the shutter and swing into the room. What a feat!
6. There were many witnesses who heard the screams of the women. They also heard two other voices. Everyone agreed that one was the voice of a Frenchman. What did they say the other voice sounded like?

Answer: All of these

All the witnesses stated that the second voice was that of a "foreigner". A Frenchman thought it was the voice of a Spaniard. An Englishman assumed it was the voice of a German and a Spaniard reasoned that it was an Englishman's voice.
7. What was actually unusual about the second voice, that was not of a Frenchman?

Answer: It was not human.

It was the grunts and cries of an escaped orang-utan.
8. The murder of the L'Espanayes was never solved.

Answer: False

A Frenchman was actually trying to prevent the murders. He was never charged. The orang-utan committed the murders. This explains the brute strength of the killer and its ability to enter through the fourth story window.
9. What was the name of Poe's fictional detective, featured in this and two other stories?

Answer: C. Auguste Dupin

Dupin was also featured in "The Mystery of Marie Roget" and "The Purloined Letter". I think "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is the best of the three.
10. What other Poe story mentions "Ourang-Outangs"? This is Poe's spelling and differs from the modern version.

Answer: "Hop-Frog"

In "Hop-Frog", there were actually people dressed as orang-utans which came to a horrible end.
