Ryder starts dancing with Twyla but Twyla thinks he is playing a trick on her and says she doesn't want to dance with him. Jeanette Sue thinks Twyla is flirting with Ryder and sets her up a few nights later.

Twyla Gay lives in the Vickery houses, a section of town that is considered poor. Highland Park is the rich side of town. Deena lives in Highland Park with her parents and brother. Twyla is surprised to see that Deena is rich because she is unpopular and made fun of at school. Twyla had assumed that Deena was poor like her. Later in the book when Twyla visits Deena's house she realizes it is a mansion like Jeanette Sue's house is.

At Club One Seven Twyla Gay and Deena put lip gloss on the bar so Jeanette Sue, Joanne, and Dawn would slip. Jeanette Sue slipped off the side of the bar and flew through the air, which made her embarrassed.

She was so embarrassed that she threw Joanne and Dawn out of the group because she didn't want any reminders of that night.

Myrna Fry says Kathy Diggers is the most stuck up girl in the RCs because Kathy rode in a float in the Orange Bowl Parade when she was four. She only got to ride in it because her father was a lawyer for the Dallas Cowboys. Anna Marie is a clone of Jeanette Sue who is the first person to be thrown out of the RCs. Dawn Walker is rich because her father owns an oil company.

She's rich but not as snobby as Kathy is. Jeanette Sue really is a snob, but Myrna Fry does anything Jeanette Sue, or JS, says. Myrna doesn't think JS is stuck up because she likes JS and wants to be her.

Deena was popular in grade school because she was funny. Everyone said she had a great personality. In high school Jeanette Sue told everyone that Deena was a slut and everyone believed her. Before Twyla came Deena had no friends. Everyone in school was also prejudiced against Deena because she was Latino.

By the end of the book it didn't matter because Twyla and Deena were popular again.

Bobby Jim Wilson, a sneaky follower, ended up driving the car to the mall. Twyla was tricked by the RCs to wait at the mall at 11:00. When the RCs arrived they waved at Twyla and Twyla got excited and waved back. Then the RCs drove away, leaving Twyla alone. Twyla wanted to get back at Ryder by stealing him from Jeanette Sue, because she knew he drove a convertible and Jeanette Sue told Twyla he was coming that night.

But by the end of the book she realizes that it was Bobby Jim all along and that Ryder wouldn't do something like that to her.
