In a previous Connelly book, called "The Poet", Jack tracks down a brutal serial killer and survives the encounter.
"The Candyman" is the nickname of a real serial killer called Dean Corll who, along with two others, killed twenty seven boys in Houston, Texas.
"Crammer" is the nickname of Richard Kramer, the Assistant Managing Editor in this story. It was his job to fire Jack at the start of the book and replace him with Angela Cook.
The "Nugget" is a nickname of a famous British snooker player called Steve Davis.

The Doodler was believed to have been responsible for the deaths of fourteen gay men in San Francisco. He got his moniker from sketching his victims before he had sex with them and then stabbed them to death. He has never been caught.
The"North Side Strangler operated in and around Milwaukee, Wisconsin, between 1986 and 2007. He raped and strangled seven women. So far he has not been caught.
Finally, the Baseline Killer terrorised the Phoenix metro centre between August 2005 and June 2006. He first came to police attention with attacks on women in the Baseline Road area. It is believed that he has killed eight women and one man, and has committed fifteen sexual assaults, eleven counts of kidnapping and numerous armed robberies. The police have a suspect.

L. Frank Baum and Denslow came together in 1897 when Baum asked Denslow to illustrate his book "Mother Goose in Prose". "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" had twenty four coloured plates and became known as one of the most lavishly produced children's books in American publishing. The book was first printed in 1900.
The name, Bill Denslow, is used in the book for the name of another data company.
