In a previous Connelly book, called "The Poet", Jack tracks down a brutal serial killer and survives the encounter.
"The Candyman" is the nickname of a real serial killer called Dean Corll who, along with two others, killed twenty seven boys in Houston, Texas.
"Crammer" is the nickname of Richard Kramer, the Assistant Managing Editor in this story. It was his job to fire Jack at the start of the book and replace him with Angela Cook.
The "Nugget" is a nickname of a famous British snooker player called Steve Davis.

Whilst checking the website of Denise Babbit's lawyer, Tom Fox, Jack finds that the website is designed by Western Data. This is the location that hosted the killer's tripwire sites. Jack comes to the conclusion that this cannot be a coincidence. He confirms his hunch by checking to see if anyone, connected to the victims, had used the company to store data.

"The Bunker" is a colocation centre where data from client corporations and businesses are stored and are accessible twenty four hours a day to those clients through high speed fibre optic cables.

Rachel is fired from the agency because of her misuse of a jet aircraft when she went to Jack's rescue. Jack is furious with the bureaucracy of the agency and threatens to write and expose their vindictiveness. He thinks that Misty Monroe sounds like the name of a porn star.

"The Scarecrow" is the person who protects against those who wish to access the data illegally. So if a hacker, troll or virus carrier connects to the servers his job is to isolate and locate that person; and as an added bonus post some child pornography on to the hacker's computer and inform the FBI.

On the 20th of December 1968 the killer who would become known as the Zodiac Killer, killed two teenagers in Benicia, Northern California. According to Wikipedia he killed five victims and injured two more. He claimed to have killed thirty seven people and he has never been caught.
The Doodler was believed to have been responsible for the deaths of fourteen gay men in San Francisco. He got his moniker from sketching his victims before he had sex with them and then stabbed them to death. He has never been caught.
The"North Side Strangler operated in and around Milwaukee, Wisconsin, between 1986 and 2007. He raped and strangled seven women. So far he has not been caught.
Finally, the Baseline Killer terrorised the Phoenix metro centre between August 2005 and June 2006. He first came to police attention with attacks on women in the Baseline Road area. It is believed that he has killed eight women and one man, and has committed fifteen sexual assaults, eleven counts of kidnapping and numerous armed robberies. The police have a suspect.

L. Frank Baum and Denslow came together in 1897 when Baum asked Denslow to illustrate his book "Mother Goose in Prose". By insisting colour be used in the illustrations Denslow created a mini masterpiece. "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" had twenty four coloured plates and became known as one of the most lavishly produced children's books in American publishing. The book was first printed in 1900.
The name, Bill Denslow, is used in the book for the name of another data company.
