1. The story takes place in a fictional town called Potter's Field in the United States of America. In which state is the town located?

Answer: Wyoming

Potter's Field is set in a valley in Wyoming. There are only two ways into the town, making it isolated and easy prey to what happens in the story.
2. What is the name of the local Police Chief?

Answer: Nathan Slaughter

A rather macabre sounding name considering the bloodshed that happens in the book. Gordon Dunlap and Geoffrey Clinker are the same person. Dunlap is a journalist from Slaughter's past and Clinker is his pseudonym when he writes for "Rolling Stone" magazine. Clifford is the first character whom we read about being attacked by a crazed animal in graphic detail.
3. What is the name of the mayor of Potter's Field?

Answer: Parsons

As well as being Mayor he owns the local newspaper, "The Potter's Field Gazette". Dunlap is a journalist from New York who originally was heading for Seattle to go to a clinic there. Rettig and Hammel are police officers.
4. The Police Chief was originally a police officer in a major American city where he/she retired after a bad experience. Which city?

Answer: Detroit

We never find out exactly what happened only that it involves two young boys and a convenience store. Whatever happened it appears he lost his nerve and decided to move to Potter's Field. Big mistake!
5. Marge is an employee of the Police Department in Potter's Field as a receptionist. Under what circumstances did she first meet the Police Chief?

Answer: her husband's suicide

Shortly after Slaughter arrived in town Marge's husband committed suicide and she sought comfort and solace in Slaughter's arms.
6. The Police Chief owns a ranch. How many horses does he have there?

Answer: 2

He was a failure as a rancher so therefore he went back to what he knows, police work.
7. The victims seem to have contracted a virus which spreads by biting. What does the coroner think it is originally?

Answer: rabies

The victim of a bite froths at the mouth, is hyper sensitive to sunlight and is ultra-aggressive. However the virus is a different shape when seen under an electron microscope.
8. During the story the police force locate one of the bite victims, a young boy who has already attacked his mother. In which building is he located?

Answer: Baynard Mansion

The boy is trapped and netted in the mansion by the police when he attacks Officer Rettig. The other places are not named in the book.
9. How long has the Police Chief been in Potter's Field?

Answer: 5 years

He came to the town figuring that it would be quiet and peaceful after the dangers of being a police officer in Detroit.
10. What is the name of the nearby abandoned mining town that is believed to be one of the places that the contagion may have come from?

Answer: Motherlode

Before the major action happens Slaughter asks the local police officer for any ideas where the crazed victims may be hiding and is disturbed when he is told about the old mining town.
