Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the answer to Slater's first riddle for Kevin: What falls but never breaks? What breaks but never falls?

Answer: Night and day

Slater gives Kevin this riddle the first time he calls him. Kevin has three minutes to solve the riddle and confess his sin before his car explodes with
him inside it. Kevin is unable to do either and the car explodes three minutes
later just moments after Kevin escapes from it.
2. Where do we first encounter FBI agent Jennifer Peters?

Answer: In her boss' office

Jennifer's brother had been killed by a murderer she was attempting to track down. Jennifer was meeting with her boss to convince him that, despite the recent tragedy, she was mentally sound enough to take on the Kevin Parson case.
3. What government agency does Samantha Sheer work for?

Answer: California Bureau of Investigation (CBI)

Samantha had worked in law enforcement in New York for years before coming to Sacramento to work for the CBI. She had just finished her orientation when she
learned about the Kevin Parson case. Since Samantha and Kevin were childhood friends, she immediately went to his aid.
4. Each time Slater gives Kevin a riddle to solve, he tells him how much time he has to solve it and the length of time is different for each riddle. Choose the order of periods of time that went with each riddle.

Answer: 3 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 6 hours

Did you notice how the lengths of time increase by progressions of three? That's one of the reasons why the novel is titled "Thr3e." Another reason is because one of the characters has a strange form of Dissociative Identity Disorder which involves the person having and acting out two other distinct personalities,as well as his own, being completely unaware of the other personalities and even of the fact that they have this condition.
5. Where in California is the novel primarily set?

Answer: Long Beach

Kevin had grown up in Long Beach and was attending a local divinity school, The Divinity School of the Pacific, South, at the time the story opens. Palos
Verdes is where Kevin and Samantha go to temporarily escape the threat of Slater. Los Angeles and San Francisco are never mentioned in the story.
6. What is the hint Slater gives to Samantha and Kevin for the fourth riddle, "What wants to be filled but will always be empty?"

Answer: 36933

Kevin and Samantha head to warehouse 369 on thirty-third street. The two decide to enter the warehouse separately: Kevin through the front door, Samantha to the back. Kevin gets inside the warehouse but Samantha is somehow locked out. After Kevin chases Slater through the warehouse Slater speaks to Kevin in-person for the first time.
7. What building does Slater blow up?

Answer: The Augustine Memorial Library

Jennifer and Kevin barely get everyone out of the library before it blows sky high. Slater blew up the building before the ninety minute deadline ended because he was angry at Kevin for involving the FBI.
8. Who is the dean of the divinity school which Kevin attends?

Answer: Dr. Francis

The first scene of the novel depicts Dr. Francis and Kevin talking about the nature of good and evil in the doctor's office. Kevin asks Dr. Francis if man can step beyond the reach of evil. Dr. Francis responds that no one can step
beyond evil's reach in this lifetime.
9. What theme is central to the plot of the "Thr3e?"

Answer: The good and evil natures of mankind

Even though "Thr3e" utilizes all the right amounts of mystery and suspense, at
its heart the story is truly about good and evil and the poor mortal struggling between the two. Dr. Francis makes this observation to Kevin near the end of novel.
10. What mental illness plays a significant part in the latter portions of "Thr3e?"

Answer: Dissociative Identity Disorder

Formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder, individuals suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder have two or more distinct personalities. The person in this story who has this condition is under the possession of three
personalities: their own and two others they are completely unaware of.
