Phyllis Reynolds Naylor wrote the book "Shiloh" in 1991. "Shiloh" received the John Newbery Medal in 1992. The award is given to the author of "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children."

The young boy was named Marty Preston, and he hid Shiloh from his family in a barn he made. His father soon found out about the dog, when Shiloh was attacked by a stray and Marty had no choice but to get his father's help.
