Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this fairytale, there is an evil queen in disguise who tries to poison a female with black hair and white skin. What fairytale am I referring to?

Answer: Snow White

Snow White is a classic tale collected by the Brothers Grimm. The story is about a princess named Snow White and an evil queen who wants to get rid of Snow White. Trying to avoid the queen, Snow White meets friendly dwarfs along the way and they become friends. In the end, the queen is defeated and all the good characters live happily ever after.
2. In this fairytale, there is a girl who serves a snide woman as a maid and falls in love with a prince at a ball. What fairytale am I talking about?

Answer: Cinderella

This is another classic tale perfect for a little girl's bedtime story. In summary, a normal girl named Cinderella works for an evil woman as a maid and one day goes to the royal ball and falls in love with the prince. Then she loses her glass slipper at the castle and after finding it, the prince returns the slipper to its owner. Cinderella and the prince then marry and live happily ever after.

3. A Russian grand duchess lives happily with her family until a war against her father the Tsar breaks out. Which tragic tale am I speaking of?

Answer: There is no such fairytale

There is no fairytale! It happened in real life. The grand duchess was Anastasia, and, being the youngest of the sisters (the other grand duchesses), was nicknamed 'The Last Grand Duchess'. She was assassinated, along with the rest of her family, in 1918.
4. Three little barn animals attempt to build shelter, but struggle because of a wild animal. What is this story?

Answer: The Three Little Pigs

In another cutesy little bedtime tale, the three pigs each build a shelter made out of different materials. That Big Bad Wolf gives no assistance at all! He tries blowing their houses down, and it works - except on one!

This story first appeared in print in the work of James Halliwell-Phillipps, in 1842.
5. In this story, a beautiful sea creature wishes to visit the land, but must pay the price to do so. Which fairytale am I summarizing?

Answer: The Little Mermaid

This is yet another classic story, authored by Hans Christian Andersen. The Little Mermaid daydreams of going on the shore above the sea, but the only way to get there is by using the sea witch's magic. The Little Mermaid must pay the price for wanting to visit the shore, however. On shore, she meets a prince, but in the end, she turns into sea foam and must help mankind for 300 years.
6. A wealthy merchant and his three daughters live a happy life until they lose their wealth to a tempest, and one of the daughters meets a beast. Which story is this?

Answer: Beauty and the Beast

Humpty Dumpty is a nursery rhyme. Beauty and the Beast is correct. One of the merchant's daughters, specifically the youngest, Belle, meets a beast after looking for her father when he went out to regain his wealth. After spending time with him, Belle learns of the beast's past. The beast is really a prince cursed by a fairy. When Belle, in tears, confesses her affection for the Beast, one of her tears falls onto the Beast. The tear alters the curse on the Beast and transforms him into a human prince.

7. A princess is born and is cursed to prick her finger and die. This is which story?

Answer: Sleeping Beauty

This story, in basic summary, describes how a princess is born into a royal family. A party is held for the infant girl, however, an evil fairy crashes the affair and curses the princess. Sixteen years later the curse falls through and the princess falls into a deep slumber. Ten decades later, she marries a prince and they give birth to two kids. The prince's mother, though, is an ogress and decides to enjoy the young Queen and her children as a meal. Though, when this plot is exposed the ogress disposes of herself into a pit of venomous creatures. The King and his family live Happily Ever After thereon.

You can read the full text of this story at SurLaLune Fairy Tales {original tale by Charles Perrault, included in Andrew Lang's 'Blue Fairy Book'}.
8. A little girl gets lost in the woods and invites herself into a house that is not hers in which story?

Answer: Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Goldilocks, named after her luscious golden curls, basically breaks-and-enters the residence of, unbeknownst to her, three bears. Feeling hungry, she samples two bowls of porridge and completely devours a third. Then, wishing to relax, she sits on the bears' chairs and breaks the baby's chair on accident. Feeling tired, she decides to nap in the bears' beds. When she awakens, she discovers the house's residents are home. Fleeing for her life, she learns never to trespass on others' property again.

This question is based on the adaptation of the story by Joseph Cundall - older versions are much less familiar to modern readers.
9. A witch makes a deal with her neighbors and raises their baby girl for a dozen years and then locks her in a tower. This is a plot point from which fairy-tale?

Answer: Rapunzel

A very popular fairy-tale, this is. When the witch locks the girl in a tower, after a while a prince hears her singing, and they fall in love. They secretly meet, and when the witch finds out, devises a plan and sends Rapunzel in the forest to fend for herself. When trying to meet her, the prince discovers he's looking at the witch and not Rapunzel. Terrified, he jumps out of the tower and is blinded by the thorns below. When he finally finds Rapunzel, with two baby twins, they marry and live happily ever after.

10. When a man makes a marionette, it goes on various adventures. Which story is this from?

Answer: The Adventures of Pinocchio

This fairy-tale has lots of adventure in store for the reader! The wooden puppet name Pinocchio goes on several adventures, from getting his "father" arrested to almost being used as firewood! He also goes on and is almost eaten by a large snake, and meets a fairy, who rescues him. In the end, Pinocchio turns into a real boy, and lives happily ever after.

Note: this is not technically a "fairy tale", as it was written in 1883 by Carlo Collodi, and not collected from an oral tradition, but it has multiple fantasy elements to it, so I chose to incorporate it into this quiz.
