1. The 'Oz' Series by L Frank Baum

Answer: Glinda

In the novel 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' Glinda is the Good Witch of the South and only appears towards the end of the novel. In the film the character of Glinda is merged with that of the Witch of the North hence why she appears earlier in the film. Glinda is the ruler of the Quadling Country in the south of the land of Oz.

The character of Glinda appears in various other novels in Baum's 'Oz' series.
2. 'Discworld' series by Terry Pratchett

Answer: Granny Weatherwax

Granny Weatherwax first appeared in the novel 'Equal Rites', the third novel in the 'Discworld' series. The character also appears in a number of subsequent novels in the series. She is portrayed in the books as the leader of the witches that live in the Ramptops area but, as witches don't have leaders, Granny is described as "the most highly-regarded of the leaders they didn't have"!
3. 'Macbeth' by William Shakespeare

The Weird Sisters is how the three witches in the play Macbeth are styled in the character list. The Weird Sisters are crucial to the plot of the play as it is they who tell Macbeth the prophesy that he will be king which leads to him murdering Duncan.

The characters speak some of the most well known lines in Shakespeare's plays including the "when shall we three meet again" speech and the incantation that begins "double double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble."

5. 'Harry Potter' Series by JK Rowling

Jadis of Charn who is more often referred to as the White Witch is a character who features heavily in the novels 'The Magician's Nephew' and 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe' which are part of CS Lewis' 'Chronicles of Narnia'. In 'The Magician's Nephew' Jadis is Queen of Charn who lets the land of Charn be destroyed rather than admit defeat; later in the novel she flees to a remote corner of the land of Narnia to work on her magic and become the White Witch who traps Narnia in eternal winter.

The story of Jadis' defeat and the return of spring to Narnia is told in 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe'.
7. 'The Dark Tower' series by Stephen King

'The Dark Tower' series consists of eight books which tell of the character Roland Deschain and his search for the Dark Tower. The series contains themes from a number of literary genres including horror, western, sci-fi and fantasy. Rhea of the Coos is an old witch and enemy of Roland, she mainly appears in the fourth novel of the series 'Wizard and Glass'.
8. 'The Witches of Eastwick' by John Updike

'The Witches of Eastwick' was first published in 1984 and is set in the 1960s in the Rhode Island town of Eastwick. The central characters are three women who develop magical powers after either leaving their husbands or being widowed, as is the case for Alexandra Spofford.

'The Lives of the Mayfair Witches' series starts with the novel 'The Witching Hour' which was published in 1990. The series tells the story of Dr. Rowan Mayfair a neurosurgeon who starts to discover her magical powers when she discovers more about her family after the death of her estranged mother.
