Margaret Mitchell only published one single book, and initially wrote purely for amusement. "Gone With the Wind" is a classic love story involving Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler. Place of the action is Georgia, during the Civil War and the Reconstruction.

Herman Wouk gained international fame with his book "The Caine Mutiny" (1951), followed by a theatre play "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial" (1953).
Wouk spent at least thirteen years writing "The Winds of War" (1970) and "War and Remembrance" (1978). The protagonist is Victor Henry, a Navy officer whose family witnesses the rise of Nazism in "The Winds of War". This novel ends with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, also the starting point for "War and Remembrance". "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" is a series of seven manga in which the heroine tries to bring peace among quarreling kingdoms, after a nuclear war has devastated the planet. The name Nausicaä reminds of the Phaeaecian princess who meets Odysseus during his long travel home.

Daniel is so taken up by the book he chooses, which is titled "The Shadow of the Wind", that he sets out to track all the books written by its author, Julian Carax only to find that someone else has been destroying all the author's works for almost a decade.
