Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Val Kilmer starred in "Real Genius", and in "Heat" (along with Tom Sizemore). What did Kilmer's characters in both movies have in common?

Answer: They both had the same first name.

In "Real Genius" (1985), Kilmer played Chris Knight, a brilliant, fun-loving student at Pacific Tech. Chris and his new roommate, Mitch, were working on a laser project, which they later found out was being sold to the military by their smarmy professor.

In 1995's "Heat", Chris Shiherlis (Kilmer) and his partners, Neil McCauley and Michael Cheritto (Robert De Niro and Tom Sizemore), wanted to pull off one more heist before they retired, but things didn't go according to plan.
2. Tom Sizemore appeared in "Saving Private Ryan" as Mike Horvath, and in "Pearl Harbor" (which costarred William Lee Scott) as Earl Sistern. What rank did both of Sizemore's characters share?

Answer: Sergeant

In "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), Sgt. Horvath was part of a mission to find a soldier whose brothers had all been recently killed in the war. Sgt. Earl Sistern fought bravely to repel the enemy attack so that US planes could take off, in "Pearl Harbor" (2001). William Lee Scott played one of the pilots, Lt. Thompson. Early in his acting career, Tom Sizemore played Sgt. Vinnie Ventresca in the TV series "China Beach".
3. William Lee Scott and Jake Gyllenhaal played West Virginia teenagers who became interested in rocketry after watching Sputnik fly over their town. For Homer (Gyllenhaal), rocketry wasn't just a hobby, but a way to escape the future which awaited him in the coal mines. Which 1999 movie was this?

Answer: October Sky

Expected to spend his life working in the coal mines like his father, Homer decided that he was going to aspire to higher goals. Together, Homer and his friends collected the necessary materials and began experimenting with their own rockets. And although they had a few setbacks, the boys persevered with the encouragement of a teacher.

The movie, based on Homer Hickam's life, also starred Chris Cooper and Laura Dern.
4. In "The Good Girl" (2002), Holden and Justine (Jake Gyllenhaal and Jennifer Aniston) were married.

Answer: False

Justine was bored with her life, as well as her marriage to Phil (John C. Reilly), and spent much of her time at work wondering how differently her life could have been, had she made other choices. Longing for something exciting, she drifted into an affair with her coworker, a young man named Holden.

After finding out she was pregnant, Justine was forced to make a choice between the unknown (with Holden) and staying in her marriage. Zooey Deschanel, Tim Blake Nelson and Mike White (who wrote the script) also starred in "The Good Girl".
5. Jennifer Aniston played Sarah Huttinger in "Rumor Has It..." (2005). The woman who played her grandmother also played the grandmother of Cameron Diaz's character, in "In Her Shoes" (2005). Which actress was it?

Answer: Shirley MacLaine

When Sarah Huttinger found out that "The Graduate" was based on her family, she went in search of the man who had slept with her grandmother and her mother. Shirley MacLaine played Sarah's grandmother, who preferred that her granddaughter call her Katharine, in "Rumor Has It...".

In "In Her Shoes", Shirley MacLaine played Ella, the grandmother that sisters Maggie and Rose (Diaz and Toni Collette) had not seen since their mother died. After she treated Rose shabbily, Maggie had no place to go until she found out that Ella was still alive.
6. In "The Invisible Circus" (2001), what relation was Faith (Cameron Diaz) to the character of Gail (Blythe Danner)?

Answer: Faith was Gail's daughter.

Faith's apparent suicide while travelling in Europe with her boyfriend, Wolf, devastated her sister Phoebe (Jordana Brewster), and her mother, Gail (Danner). Years later, Phoebe went to Europe and enlisted Wolf's help to find out what really happened to her sister. "The Invisible Circus" also starred Christopher Eccleston as Wolf.
7. Blythe Danner played the future mother-in-law of Ben Holmes (Ben Affleck), who was having a very hard time getting to Savannah for his wedding. First, his plane crashed, then he and his new travelling companion were arrested, and then they missed their train. Which movie was this?

Answer: Forces of Nature

With his fiancee waiting for him in Savannah, Ben tried to leave New York, but his plane crashed on takeoff. He and his new-found friend, Sarah (Sandra Bullock), ended up sharing a rental car with a man who caused them all to be arrested by having marijuana on him.

After that was straightened out, Ben and Sarah got on a train, but missed it by being on the wrong car when the train separated. One way or another, Ben and Sarah eventually arrived in Savannah, but what were they to do about their mutual attraction? "Forces of Nature" (1999) also starred Maura Tierney and Steve Zahn.
8. Ben Affleck played one in "200 Cigarettes" (1999), and Bill Paxton played one in "Streets of Fire" (1984). What did they play?

Various young people got sidetracked by love and booze on their way to Monica's New Year's Eve party, while Monica fretted that no one would show up, in "200 Cigarettes". Ben Affleck's character had no name, but he was hit on by Lucy (Courtney Love). Kate Hudson, Paul Rudd, Martha Plimpton, Christina Ricci and Casey Affleck also starred in the movie, which was set in the early 1980s.

In "Streets of Fire", Cody (Michael Pare) was called on to rescue his former girlfriend, rock star Ellen Aim (Diane Lane), after she was kidnapped. Bill Paxton played Clyde, a bartender who was rewarded with a punch in the face when he tried to give Cody's sidekick, McCoy (Amy Madigan), a hard time.
9. In "Apollo 13", Bill Paxton played an astronaut whose life was placed in peril after an explosion occurred on the spacecraft. In which movie did Dennis Quaid portray an astronaut?

Answer: The Right Stuff

"Apollo 13" (1995) told the story of NASA's third moon landing mission, which turned into a rescue mission after the service module suffered an explosion. Bill Paxton, Tom Hanks and Kevin Bacon played the three astronauts, Fred Haise, Jim Lovell and Jack Swigert. Dennis Quaid played astronaut Gordo Cooper, one of the seven Mercury astronauts, in "The Right Stuff" (1983).

The movie covers the selection process, some of the Mercury missions, and the personal lives of the astronauts. Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, Charles Frank, Lance Henriksen, Fred Ward and Scott Paulin played the rest of the Mercury astronauts.
10. In the mid-1990s, Dennis Quaid and Val Kilmer both played the character of Doc Holliday, in different movies.

In "Tombstone" (1993), Kilmer played Doc, who met up with the Earp brothers in Tombstone. At first, the Earps merely wanted to run a business, but after provocation by the Cowboys, Wyatt and his brothers became lawmen again.
