Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Finish the title of the 1975 film that connects Meat Loaf to Tim Curry. "The ____________ Picture Show."

Answer: Rocky Horror

"Rocky Horror" was a very successful stage show in England before it was adapted for the screen. It was written by Richard O'Brien, who also starred in the movie as Riff Raff, along with Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick. The movie has been a cult hit at midnight showings for years. I've never been to one, but they look like a great time.
2. In what 1991 John Landis comedy do Tim Curry and Marisa Tomei both have roles?

Answer: Oscar

This movie also stars Sylvester Stallone as a gangster named "Snaps" trying to go straight on a crazy, confusing day. Not one of the best movies ever, but pretty fun, you just have to pay attention. Also stars Chazz Palminteri.
3. Released in 1994, Ron Howard directed which of the following New York City-based movies that starred both Marisa Tomei and Michael Keaton?

Answer: The Paper

Released in 1994, "The Paper" follows a day in the life of an editor (Keaton) at a New York City newspaper as he deals with a pregnant wife (Tomei), a breaking story, and his co-workers (including Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, and Randy Quaid). A great cast in my favorite Ron Howard film.
4. What 1989 Tim Burton movie starred Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson?

Answer: Batman

Probably the most-hyped movie in the history of time. If you only knew the Adam West in "Batman," this movie more than likely scared you. But you probably loved "Batman and Robin." (In my opinion, if you haven't seen that last "Batman" movie, don't. Seriously.)
5. Jack Nicholson co-starred with Adam Sandler in what comedy with the tag-lines "Feel The Love" and "Let The Healing Begin"?

Answer: Anger Management

Released in 2003, Jack (who I think is so much scarier when he's really funny) starred as Dr. Buddy Rydell, who applies his unorthodox methods to help Sandler deal with repressed emotions. My favorite part of this movie is Dr. Rydell's business card, "Know Buddy Cares."
6. Adam Sandler co-starred with Winona Ryder and Jon Turturro in which movie, featuring a brief cameo by fellow "SNL" alumni Rob Schneider?

Answer: Mr. Deeds

Okay, so I know that this isn't the only Sandler movie Rob Schneider pops up in, but it's the only one I've seen, and I like this movie. Released in 2002, this movie is a remake of the 1936 Frank Capra film "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town" starring Gary Cooper.
7. What 1995 big budget blockbuster comic book adaptation starred Sylvester Stallone and Rob Schneider?

Answer: Judge Dredd

Also featuring Armand Assante and Max von Sydow. This movie takes place in a chaotic future where the police have been replaced by judges who act as on-the-spot jury and executioners. I think it's an all right movie if there's nothing on Sunday afternoon, your car isn't running, and it's raining.
8. Released in 1997, James Mangold directed Sylvester Stallone and Ray Liotta in which of the following films?

Answer: Cop Land

Probably his most critically acclaimed performance since "Rocky", Stallone packed on extra pounds to play a deaf sheriff in a town populated by NYC cops, not all of whom are on the up and up. "Cop Land" also stars Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel.
9. In 2001, Ray Liotta had a role in which of the following movies that starred Sir Anthony Hopkins in one of his most famous roles?

Answer: Hannibal

As Hannibal Lecter, Hopkins shares with Liotta what I can only describe as the most horrifically disturbing scene I've ever witnessed on-screen in this movie, directed by Ridley Scott. If you've seen it, you know which one I mean.
10. This 1991 film, directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster, was ranked #65 on the "American Film Institute's 100 Greatest Movies" list.

Answer: Silence of the Lambs

I believe this movie should have been much higher on the list. It ranked behind "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and ahead of "Network". The film was based on the fantastic novel by Thomas Harris. Sir Anthony Hopkins was actually the second actor to play Harris' classic villain, Hannibal Lecter.

The doctor was played by Brian Cox (Stryker of "X-Men 2") in the 1986 adaptation of the novel "Red Dragon", called "Manhunter". Read "Red Dragon". It is one of the very finest crime novels out there and is the best of the "Hannibal Lecter Trilogy."
11. "On every street in every city, there's a nobody who dreams of being a somebody." This was one of several taglines for this 1976 movie starring Robert DeNiro and Jodie Foster.

Answer: Taxi Driver

Directed by Martin Scorsese, Robert DeNiro, in his role as cult "anti-hero" Travis Bickle, created what is probably the most re-created scene in film history. "You talkin' to me? I'm the only one here."
12. In 1995, Robert DeNiro starred as Neil McCauley in this Michael Mann crime epic with a massive cast, which included Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis.

Answer: Heat

Though they both starred in the film masterpiece "The Godfather, Part II", Robert DeNiro and fellow film great Al Pacino shared their first on-screen scene together in "Heat". The huge cast also included Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, and Natalie Portman. I think this film had more characters than "Gangs of New York". That's a lot.
13. What 1991 Oliver Stone film, starring Val Kilmer and Kyle MacLachlan, has been criticized by some for being more fiction than fact?

Answer: The Doors

Val Kilmer is mind-blowing as Jim Morrison. I am a huge Doors fan, and while Ray Manzarek has said that the movie is more of an artistic tribute to the band than a factual biography, I still love Oliver Stone's interpretation of the band's mythology. Very cosmic. (Watch this movie after you haven't slept for two days, it will mess you up.)
14. Kyle MacLachlan and Halle Berry starred as the villainous pair Cliff Vandercave and Sharon Stone in this 1994 live-action adaptation of a 1960's cartoon.

Answer: Flintstones

Film legend Elizabeth Taylor had a cameo in this mediocre cartoon adaptation. For some reason I find that very odd.
15. This 2003 film, directed by Bryan Singer and starring Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman, was named by the magazine "Wizard" as the #1 comic book-to-film adaptation of all time.

Answer: X2

As a mega "X-Men" geek myself, I completely agree with the gang at "Wizard". The first "X-Men" movie was good, better than I expected, but the sequel completely blew it away. The opening scene of Nightcrawler's teleportation attack is one of the very coolest things I've ever seen on screen.
16. In 2001, Hugh Jackman co-starred with Meg Ryan in this romantic fantasy, directed by James Mangold.

Answer: Kate and Leopold

This surprise hit featured the tag lines "This Christmas, chivalry makes a comeback" and "If they lived in the same century they'd be perfect for each other."
17. This 1987 sci-fi comedy, produced by Steven Spielberg, starred Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid.

Answer: Innerspace

This is a neat, fun movie that also stars slapstick comedian Martin Short and the creepy/funny Henry Gibson. Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid also starred together in "DOA".
18. This 2000 release, starring Dennis Quaid and Andre Braugher, combined elements of sci-fi/fantasy, crime mystery, and family drama into a decades-spanning story of a father and son.

Answer: Frequency

I love this movie. If you've never seen it, go see it now. John (James Caviezel), a cop in the 1990's, finds he can use an old radio to talk to his father (Dennis Quaid), dead 30 years, in the 1960's. Not only do they try to change the past and future, they must deal with the consequences of the changes they try to impose. Throw in a serial killer mystery, and you have one of the most original and surprisingly touching movies I've ever seen.
19. Andre Braugher and Nicolas Cage starred together in this 1998 love story, whose soundtrack featured the smash hit "Iris" by the GooGoo Dolls.

Answer: City of Angels

This movie also stars Dennis Franz and Meg Ryan, in a story about an angel who is willing to give up eternity to become mortal.
20. Nicolas Cage and Gary Sinise both star in this 1998 movie about the very public murder of a government official and the not-so-sterling cop chasing down the killer.

Answer: Snake Eyes

Director Brian De Palma used split screen shots and casino surveillance cameras masterfully in this. The opening scene is amazing, a single, apparently uncut scene following Nicolas Cage as cop Rick Santoro through the action of a pre-match boxing arena. This is one of my very favorite movies of all time.
21. In which of the following films, released in the 1990's, did Gary Sinise appear in, opposite Tom Hanks?

Answer: All of these

Sinise and Hanks starred together in 1994's "Forrest Gump" with Hanks as the slow-whitted but sweet Gump and Sinise as his embittered friend Lt. Dan. They appeared together again in 1995 in Ron Howard's "Apollo 13" as Jim Lovell and Ken Mattingly. In 1999, Hanks starred as Paul Edgecomb in "The Green Mile", which also featured Sinise in the minor role of public defender Burt Hammersmith. Two great actors, three great movies.
22. This 1984 fantasy romantic comedy was not only the first major motion picture for its star, Tom Hanks, but also its director, Ron Howard. This movie also featured "SCTV" cast members John Candy and Eugene Levy.

Answer: Splash

This movie is a cute modern fairy tale about an unhappy man, played by Tom Hanks, who falls in love with a mermaid, played by Daryl Hannah. John Candy co-stars as Hanks' brother, and Eugene Levy is the scientist hunting for proof of the mermaid's existance.
23. John Candy and Richard Pryor co-starred as down-on-their-luck minor league baseball players in this 1985 comedy, based on a novel by George Barr McCutcheon and several earlier film adaptations.

Answer: Brewster's Millions

The first film adaptation of McCutcheon's novel was in 1914, followed by others in 1921, 1935, and 1945. Another adaptation was "Miss Brewster's Millions" in 1926 and "Three On A Spree" in 1961. How would you blow $30 million in 30 days?
24. Richard Pryor stars in this 1988 comedy as Arlo Pear, a businessman who's just gotten what he thinks is a dream promotion to Idaho. Dana Carvey also appears as the seemingly harmless Brad Williams.

Answer: Moving

The seemingly harmless Brad Williams turns out to be a multiple personality headcase who destroys Arlo's car between New Jersey and Idaho! Arlo's many trials during his relocation include a moving truck that never shows up and a house whose former owners took a lot with them when they moved out, like the pool.
25. And finally, in what 1992 comedy starring Dana Carvey did Meat Loaf also have a cameo appearance?

Answer: Wayne's World

Meat Loaf played a bouncer named Tiny at Wayne and Garth's favorite club, Gasworks. I still love this movie, this is one of the only "SNL" movie adaptations I feel worth watching.
