Answer: Moana

Moana lives on the island of Motunui. She is the daughter of the village chief, and is therefore expected to stay on the island to lead and support her people. However, the ocean chooses her, as a toddler, to restore the heart of Te Fiti and save the islands. Moana doesn't want to be a princess - she wants to be a master wayfinder, like her ancestors before her.

Moana is voiced by Auli'i Cravalho, a teenage actress from Kohala, Hawaii. According to "Huffington Post", Cravalho was the last actress seen by casting director Rachel Sutton, on the last day of casting.

Answer: Hei Hei

Hei Hei (also spelled Heihei) is a very accident-prone and stupid chicken, voiced by Alan Tudyk. Moana has to save his life many, many times on her quest because he tends to be oblivious to the dangers around him.

Early in the film, one of the villagers is perplexed by Hei Hei's desire to eat rocks and questions his intelligence, causing Moana to say "Well, some of our strengths lie beneath the surface... far beneath... but I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to Hei Hei than meets the eye".

Fun fact: hei hei means "chicken" in Māori.

Answer: Tui

Moana's father, Tui, is voiced by Temuera Morrison. He is a caring but overprotective father. Despite seeing Moana's love for the sea, he forbids her from sailing past the reef and encourages her to follow in his footsteps and become the chief of the village. Later in the film, we discover that Tui's best friend died whilst sailing in the dangerous waters past the reef - a fate he wants to protect Moana from.

Answer: Kakamora

The Kakamora are a band of "murdering, little pirates" - according to Maui! - who sneak up on Moana and Maui in order to steal the Heart of Te Fiti. Moana first thinks that they are cute, until they draw angry faces on their coconut shells. The Kakamora do not speak, but they communicate ominously by banging on drums!

Answer: Te Fiti

Te Fiti is a compassionate and elegant goddess who uses her power to create life. At the touch of her hand, flowers bloom and trees grow - she is the embodiment of Mother Earth! When Maui took the Heart of Te Fiti, she turned into a fiery demon and was unable to create life or to preserve the nature on the islands.

When Te Fiti returned at the end of the film, her body formed an island as she lay down to snooze once more.

Answer: Gramma Tala

Gramma Tala is an excellent dancer and advice-giver. She is a strong and eccentric lady, who is often seen dancing at the water's edge. She is ever-supportive of her granddaughter, Moana, and helps her find out who she truly is. She gives Moana the confidence and self-belief to find Maui and save the island. After her death, we see Tala as a manta ray and as a spirit. When Tala returns to Moana as she is about to give up, Tala does not make her continue. Instead, she says that she is sorry to lay such a burden on Moana's shoulders and she will support her no matter what she decides.

Answer: Tamatoa

Tamatoa, voiced by Jemaine Clement, lives in the Realm of Monsters, where Maui believes no human would attempt going. Tamatoa is a giant crab, who covets all things shiny and loves to sing and talk about himself - cue the song, "Shiny"!

On his shell is his massive collection of all things valuable - including Maui's hook. As Maui needs his hook to shape shift, it is imperative that he takes it back. After daring to enter his cave, Moana helps Maui take the hook back. She tricks him by dipping a barnacle into green luminescent algae, making it look exactly like the Heart of Te Fiti!

Answer: Pua

Pua the pig seems the quintessential Disney sidekick - until it was Hei Hei to accompany Moana on her journey! Pua was Moana's chosen companion on her first attempt to go beyond the reef, looking for fish. Underestimating the strength of the waves and her skill at sailing, Moana's boat capsizes, leaving both Pua and Moana struggling in the water. Moana manages to save Pua and herself - but the little pig remains safe on the island for Moana's main quest to find Maui and restore the Heart.

Answer: Te Kā

Te Kā appears after Maui steals the Heart of Te Fiti, and attacks him and Moana with handfuls of fire and lava. After Moana finds Te Fiti's island missing, she spots a swirly pattern on Te Kā's chest - where the Heart of Te Fiti should go! Moana bravely lets Te Kā come to her, telling her "You know who you are", and the two touch foreheads. Te Kā is no volcanic demon - she is the literally heartless Te Fiti!

Answer: Maui

Maui, voiced by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, was born to human parents, who abandoned him. He was rescued by the gods and given a magical fish hook, allowing him to change his shape. It was Maui who stole the Heart of Te Fiti, hoping to use it to create life for humans.

Although he and Moana initially have difficulties, due to Maui's arrogance and Moana's stubbornness, they form a deep friendship. He teaches her how to sail and how to be a wayfinder, and she helps him gain forgiveness from Te Fiti - earning him a replacement hook after his is broken. We learn that Maui is also incredibly brave and loyal.
